British South Pole Expedition 2008 Arrives at Amundsen Scott Station

Here you see Gavin Booth and Adam Wilton of the British South Pole Expedition 2008 as they arrive at the South Pole on December 27. Their 700 mile, unsupported ski journey from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole raised funds for the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.

As they cross the skiway they are greeted by Leah Street, one of our summer crew members who is also a volunteer tour guide. She will show them to the Geographic South Pole marker, the Ceremonial Pole and to the spot where they can pitch their tents. They will get a brief tour of the station and then wait in their camp for the plane that will take them back to the coast.

As a benefit of the shooting and stitching process that created this panorama, you see them again, farther to the right, as they are escorted to the tourist area in front of the station.

This panorama shows a wide view of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station from the support buildings in the back (grid south) to the science buildings and Ice Cube project toward grid west and grid north. Please enjoy your tour as you explore the snapshots.

		I've geocoded. Please remember that at the South Pole longitude is a bit of a problem. This image was photographed facing "grid west", which is toward South America. Thanks for looking at the panorama. Posted by grannydoc

		Excellent, thanks. It's not that I don't know how to find the South Pole on a map (although gigapan.org's mini-map seems to have a problem with this ;-), but when images have a wide field of view like this one, I think they look much better in Google Earth's with its 'curved-screen' view. 		Ella, This is stunning and is so unique especially about the Google Earth presentation. I would hope that during all these cold sunny nights you are suffering through that you would be able to go back and geocode the others. 		Nice shot! Thank goodness your camera lets you take all these shots without freezing on you. Nikon should fund you, call it a extreme environment testing grant! Ethan and I read though all those snapshots and feel we feel like we could converse intelligently about this scene now. We are happy you are happy and having fun being so cold!!! Posted by rosebonsai
