Up on the Roof

A 360 degree rooftop view on a beautiful spring day in the Evergreen neighborhood of San Jose, CA, located in the foothills of the East Hills / Diablo Range. With the spring rains, the hills are briefly green before the summer turns them golden. In the distance, you can see across the South Bay to the Santa Cruz Mountains and just make out downtown San Jose through the haze. Quimby Road, the major street visible in the panorama, separates the older houses built in the 70's from the new construction in the 2000's, including Evergreen Valley High School, which all sits on land that was formerly vineyards (Mirassou Winery).

It is very sad news, indeed, to hear that the beautiful vineyards of the Mirassou Winery are now just a built over part of LA North. :^( Was the winery building itself at least spared as a historic site? I doubt I'd recognize most of San Jose after nearly 20 years away from the Bay Area.

Unfortunately, after Gallo purchased the Mirassou name, the Mirassou family was not able to extend their lease on the winery location, and so the building has been closed. It's still there at the moment - some are attempting to get a historic landmark designation from the city in order to stave off developers who want to build more houses in the area.
