Brown University, under the directorship of Dr. Martha Joukowsky, has been systematically excavation the Great Temple complex in the heart of central Petra, the capital of the Nabataean kingdom, the key archaeological destination in Jordan (also voted one of the new 8 wonders of the world). The exact function of this structure has been much debated particularly following the discovery of the theatron that was added to the structure's upper temenos well after its initial construction. Was this a multi-purpous religious, administrative and palatial building? How did its use and relationship to the city as a whole change over time? One advantage to this particular view utilizing the panorama is that we can see its connection to other major monuments such as the Qasr al-Bint (in the distance upper-mid-left), which was probably the main religious center, as well as the pool/garden complex to the right of the colonaded lower temenos, and the so-called market districts further to the right (east).
