This image provides a view of the central district of Petra along the south side of its major colonaded street. Incidentally you do not see any of the excavators at work because precisley at this moment they had all converged on the excavation of the western retaining wall trench which is largely occluded from this perspective. The reason for this break in the action was on account fo the discovery of an enigmatic marble sculpture with a greek inscription. It will await the experts in classical sculpture to determine who was in fact depicted.
