Florence With assistance from my cousin Marco Goretti of Poppi, Italy No matter how many times one sees it, when arriving and viewing the skyline of Florence it takes one’s breath away. The best place to see the city in panorama is from the Piazza Michaelangelo. Visible in this panorama are most of the famous landmarks of Florence: Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Vecchio, Il Duomo, and more. It was 95 degrees on a hot July morning when I took this image. I was surrounded by curious people interested in the gigpan and its process. What a trip! Taken in May 2007 at a small shop on the Oltrarno side of the Arno River in Florence (Firenze, Italie), Italy, near the Ponte Vecchio, probably on Borgo San Jacobo, but can't be certain. Taken by Shadowfax11. The detail of the patterns in the ties and the colours and, of course, the novel display are the attraction here. There are plenty of cartoon characters, plaid, paisley, stripes and geometric ties of all sorts. |

This stitched view has been composed from a terrace located on the southern bank of the Arno river, between Ponte della Santa Trinità (Holy Trinity Bridge) and Ponte Vecchio (Old Bridge).
Ponte Vecchio is one of Europe's oldest wholly-stone, closed-spandrel segmental arch bridges. It is one of the most reknown and visited monuments of Florence, and it has a very original superstructure formed by small and quite irregular shop blocks erected from the bridge's deck. It is said that the economic concept of bankruptcy originated here: when a merchant could not pay his debts, the table on which he sold his wares (the "banco") was physically broken ("rotto") by soldiers, and this practice was called "bancorotto". Not having a table anymore, the merchant was not able to sell anything. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponte_Vecchio |

This hand-held panorama was taken from downriver looking East towards the world-renowned Ponte Vecchio on the Arno River, Florence, Italy. The Ponte Vecchio ("Old Bridge") dates from 1345, in its present form. The bridge is lined on either side with opulent goldsmith shops and is a lively streetscape with buskers, performers, music, and generally festive atmosphere any time of day or night. It was the only bridge across the Arno which survived WWII. Mainly visible in this panorama is the Oltrarno shore of Florence (sometimes referred to as the Santo Spirito section). |
