spacer This was a very enjoyable effort and the results are most rewarding. It was a pleasure working with Maggie and Renuka and this GigaPan glows since it is one of my most often viewed panoramas.

The location can be seen from an earlier gigapan: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=6655

An experiment to determine the Leica D-Lux 3 depth of field. The camera lens was two feet or less from the granite stone and was shot at f/8. Thanks to Leica lens design: depth of focus extends from the lettering on the granite all the way back to Fondren Library.

Again, to observe the dramatic effect of Willy, click the link to the left to see him in Google Earth.

spacer Herzstein Hall, Lovett Hall & Sewall Hall

To my eye, this is one of the most incredible vistas that I have taken with a GigaPan robot, and as anyone can see who follows my GigaPan effort, this is not the first view we see of the Academic Quad, nor will it be the last.

Nineteen days of hard work required for this the 96th Commencement of Rice University.

After I took http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=12462, I went back home to take care of a number of errands and to grab some good batteries and back off to Rice in the afternoon. As I set up at the corner of Lovett Hall and Herzstein Hall, the physics building, all the little girls and their parents and teachers were going back to their cars and then, I meet Liz, who was returning to her college after spending the day with all this young kids at an engineering fair.

I must say that the experience of meeting Liz was most unexpected... one minute I was wondering what was going to happen today, and the next minute... boom, she was there and was most cooperative. After spending only a few minutes with Liz, I know that the kids really loved her. She is a special lady.

spacer Both of the girls enjoyed this and I did too. They picked the pose themselves, which is always cool.

I believe that I had the Leica set properly on exposure lock, but as you can see, there are some hot spots in the sky... so much so that a great amount of the pano was eliminated as unacceptable.. leaving only the the good part.

The original plan was to start at the top of Willy and continue to sweep to the current right side.

I will try this later and later in the afternoon to capture the colors that are so beautiful.

The two earlier GigaPans of Emma, http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=23013, and of Jennifer, http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=23002, were extracted from this because the first attempt to stitch a 360-degree panorama of the Academic Quad failed. Because of some help from the GigaPan community, the files were restitched and this is the result.

Note: The snapshots that I have created have a link that will take you to a memorable GigaPan, which was taken this past school year... lots of wonderful memories.

The view in Google Earth is pretty exciting, but remember, I am biased :)

spacer Update: The actual 360-degree GigaPan has been successfully stitched and can be seen here: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=23597.

On this special day before Commencement, Jennifer, with the support of her friends, endures sunlight to have a GigaPan taken of her achievement.

We also see Rebecca and Erin as they are walking across the Academic Quad.

This was intended to be a 360 panorama, but encountered some sort of stitching problem, which forced me to make two GigaPans from the 360. The other, Emma and Willy in the Academic Quad, can be seen here: http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=23013

This GigaPan clearly demonstrates why, when taking a GigaPan(s), I desire blue sky so much.

Note: The GigaPan had to be taken when it was taken... *sadly* the clouds gave the initial exposure reading a most difficult time, but all-in-all, considering the circumstances, I would hope that you consider this to be breath-taking :) If I had waited later or earlier, then we would have never seen the special people that we see in these two GigaPans.

spacer I bought a new Nikkor lens yesterday and today was the first attempt to use the 35mm f/1.8.

Upon entering the Academic Quad, I could see that in a few moments, after the Sun cleared a cloud, I would have some good sunlight and I saw Lisa and asked if she wanted to participate in this experimental panorama.

I hoped that it would be a 360-degree panorama, but things don't always happen the way you wish that they would and so, we almost had a 360 had it not been for user error.

As you can readily see, the panorama was taken during the student go slowly from one class to another, so there are many faces in the crowd that are recognizable to those that may know them.

Again, this was taken hand-held with a Nikon D70 camera and a Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 lens and was stitched using the GigaPan Stitcher software. Additional information can be seen upon clicking Stitcher Notes.

Also,I was happy to get this rare lens. Due to lens quality, it is very popular, so I celebrated my good fortune by buying a Heliopan UV filter.

This, again, is of the Academic Quad at Rice University and was taken prior to the GigaPan of Angela, http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=23497, and was stitched with the same stitcher version as was http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=23597 , but with different results.

In Gigapan http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=12460, you will see Rachel who happened to walk by as Liz was leaving and I asked Rachel to help and she cheerfully agreed and thought it was so cool being in a Gigapan, she wanted more and thus, we took this panorama of Rachel leaning up against Herzstein.

While I was taking the Gigapan of Rachel, all of a sudden, my main Gigapan star of all time appears to say hello and it was good to see him again. For those of you who have not seen Deian, here he is: http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=9620&snapshot_id=26838

All of these can be seen in Google Earth 4.2+ and when seen in GE, they are really spectacular. Also, you can click on "Launch Full Screen Viewer" to get a really nice view in gigapan.org.

I must add that I was most impressed with both girl's attitude about the current economic condition we are faced with. Not many jobs are available now and by the time graduation arrives, it will probably be worse, but they were confident that something better will be coming their way. And as you can see, the infectious smile that Rachel has will assure her a good future no matter how bad the economy may be.

Six students and I had a good time doing this and if you can find them all, skip to the Gigapan I took of Myra just after I completed this panorama.
