Can you find the 8 dragons?
This is a gigapan study of a small thangka -- a canvas scroll painting that I purchased during a 2007 visit to Kathmandu, Nepal. Thangkas are created by anonymous (in this case, Tibetan) Buddhist monk-artists as both a record of, and guide for contemplative experience. This 40x40 cm piece is a mandala, the "floorplan of the universe." At the center is the Endless Knot, an important tantric symbol. I'm happy with the detail, but the color is less vibrant than the original -- time to get out the studio lights. Tripod and Canon SX10 at 20x zoom were set up approx. 220 cm from the picture plane. |

This hillside of trimmed-bush sculpture, or topiary, is located at Union and Vine in San Diego, California. Not far from Old Town. There are hundreds of figures depicted, from a surfer to all kinds of animals. It's called Harper's Topiary Hill.

This is a two-block-long area in the lower East Side of Detroit (about five minutes from Downtown) where one man, Tyree Guyton, installed artwork on a house across from his where crack dealers were set up. The artwork brought so much attention that the dealers left. The project has since become a vehicle for transforming the neighborhood, its youth, and community life. The Heidelberg Project (www.heidelberg.org) is a Detroit-based community organization designed to improve lives and neighborhoods through art. |

Considered one of the finest in the world, the Art Institute of Chicago's collection of European painting consists of more than 3,500 works dating from the 12th through the mid-20th centuries. This particular room, Gallery 222, contains a stellar collection of 19th-century European paintings, including Édouard Manet's Jesus Mocked by the Soldiers (1865) and Jules Adolphe Breton's The Song of the Lark (1884).

In June 2009 a surprise exhibition of art by Banksy, the Bristolian graffiti artist, was opened at the Bristol City Museum. The amazing popularity of the exhibition took the museum by surprise as nearly 400,000 people queued for up to 5 hours to see the free show which closed on 31st August.
The tower is the Wills Memorial tower of Bristol University. Built after the first world war in gothic style it is probably the biggest clock in the world without a clockface. You only know the time if you hear the bell, Great George, striking the hour!! See my view from the top See also http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/33892/ for the view from the top of the tower http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=28576 and http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27362 and http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27250 and http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27492 |
