Time for those red-blue glasses again!
And Wow! Look at that depth of field! |

This is the Wilson Creek Coulee badlands near Drumheller, Alberta, part of Dinosaur Provincial Park. Many of the fossils in the Tyrell Museum have come from these badlands.
There's a young girl peeking out from behind one of the hoodoos. ( I'll let you find her and do a snapshot of her) High resolution large format view in Google Earth: http://maps.pbase.com/darby2/image/113204546# |

Rising approximately 500 feet (152 meters) above the surrounding terrain, Sheep Mountain Table, topped with prairie grass, yucca and juniper trees, is a significant landmark in the Stronghold Unit (section) of the Badlands National Park. It’s reached in a 30-minute drive from the Ben Reifel Visitor Center in a section of the park contained within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Sheep Mountain Table is also unique because it’s the only "table"(flat topped mesa) in which it's possible to drive on to its summit using a narrow, steep single lane dirt road (NOTE: normally only accessible with a high clearance, 4- or all-wheel drive vehicle). The road terminates on the summit of a prairie-grass and yucca topped summit ends at a pull-out that reveals a breathtaking 360-degree vista of the park, nearby farms and communities, and distant mountains.

Castle Rock is an erosional remnant of Upper Cretaceous Niobrara Formation (Smoky Hill member) chalk, located in southeastern Gove County, Kansas. The chalk badlands at this locality owe their preservation to a caprock of Ogallala Formation conglomerates, visible atop the cliff at left and in boulders on the slope. |

This 360 degree sunset pano is from a lookout at the Park's entrance.
The dinosaur fossils for which the Park is named are exposed as soil erodes from these cliffs. Tens of millions of years underground and they show up now; what are the odds? Presumably, if one examines the cliffs in this pano one might find a newly uncovered dinosaur fossil. The trick might be in recognizing it as such. (And of course the Parks people would then swoop down Pterodactyl-like and claim it! :-) ) |
