A first time visitor to Yosemite Valley may well be overwhelmed. So many things to see, so many places to go, what to see, how to get there!
May I make a suggestion? Take the Bus! http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/bus.htm While you sit, you are driven around the valley past spectacular views of the icons of Yosemite. Get off at stop #11 ( Sentinel Bridge ) and walk towards Yosemite Falls along the river. You'll have this amazing view of Yosemite Falls and the cliffs along the north side of the valley. To the extreme lower left, crossing the river, is Superintendent's Bridge. In the middle of the view is upper and lower Yosemite Falls with the gully that the trail goes up to the left and Lost Arrow and Yosemite Point to the right. Farther to the right is Indian Canyon with Arrowhead Spire to the left and Lehamite Falls to the right. On the extreme lower right is the parking lot with the shuttle bus stop #11. |

Looking East from Vancouver's Cambie Bridge you can see the Eastern portion of False Creek. Molson Indy Vancouver, Rio Tinto Dragonboat Festival, Taiwanese Festival and many more have a home here. TELUS World of Science, formerly Science World, is the centre piece. Peeking to the left you can see the Harbour Centre Lookout. City Hall is to the right. The glass enclosure is the Edgewater Casino, but also known as the former BC Pavillion site during Expo '86. From the ashes of the CART Track, the 2010 Winter Olympic Athelete's village has risen. A little to the right is the peaceful community of Mt. Pleasant, how much longer will this view be available? |

Clifton Bridge spans the river Avon and connects the City of Bristol to Leigh Woods in Somerset. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed after his death in 1864. He won a competition to design a bridge here, but because the powers that be didn't believe that such a span could be built, he had to build a brick abutment on the Leigh Woods side to reduce the span. The chains used were second hand having been used on the original Hungerford bridge over the Thames in London. The river here is tidal although the sea (Bristol Channel) is over 5 miles downstream. This is why the water is kept in Bristol Docks by lock gates (the floating harbour) otherwise all craft ended up resting on the mud at low tide. They had to have extra strong hulls hence the phrase "shipshape and Bristol fashion!'See:http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27492 for a distant view from Dundry hill. Supplying hydropower to the city of Seattle. Standing on the suspension bridge while the GigaPan is shooting, one gets a firsthand appreciation and learns a healthy respect for the awesome power of the Skagit River. |
