This shot from the top of the Wills Memorial building is a first test of panoramas from this location. In the perfect world I'd do a 360 degree from the centre of the tower (as in my test from a 4 metre pole) but as the top of the tower is very wide (15m I think) I'd need a very tall support for the camera to enable me to see the ground below over the castellations.. Instead of that I plan to do the surrounding view in four sections. This first one is looking south . I was under time pressure during a public tour of the tower but hope to get more time in the future. The tower was built in 1926 and is part of Bristol University. See small inset shot from a distance. This attempt sadly cut off the top of the bridge and the camera obscura so I'll be back when the light is right. A cloud scudded by too, making that dark patch to the right of centre. British weather is so unreliable!!! Clifton Bridge spans the river Avon and connects the City of Bristol to Leigh Woods in Somerset. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed after his death in 1864. He won a competition to design a bridge here, but because the powers that be didn't believe that such a span could be built, he had to build a brick abutment on the Leigh Woods side to reduce the span. The chains used were second hand having been used on the original Hungerford bridge over the Thames in London. The river here is tidal although the sea (Bristol Channel) is over 5 miles downstream. This is why the water is kept in Bristol Docks by lock gates (the floating harbour) otherwise all craft ended up resting on the mud at low tide. They had to have extra strong hulls hence the phrase "shipshape and Bristol fashion!'See:http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27492 for a distant view from Dundry Balloons over the bridge at http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=30355

This is the second shot I took here (and appeared in twice) at the lovely Clifton Lido. Try their custard tarts but leave one for me! This was done on auto setting and apart from the sky seems to have worked better than the previous manual one. The newly re-furbished Victorian Lido which lay derelict for almost 20 years is now a health spa, swimming pool and super restaurant. |

The Wills Memorial Building was built using funds supplied by the Wills tobacco family and finished in 1926. It is part of Bristol University and stands at the top of Park Street in Bristol. See the small pic of the tower at the bottom right.
This is my first 360 degree panorama and so is experimental. It was taken from the top of a 3 metre stand which I trundled up the tower. See also http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=24574 and http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27492 There's actually very much more to see on this Gigapan than you may at first think. Explore Bristol! A much better version is a 360 degree shot from a 6 metre stand showing even more. See it at at http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/33892/ |

The Clifton Bridge and Observatory from Leigh Woods. The device hanging under the bridge is the inspection and maintenance cradle which runs along the bridge on the handrail. In June 2009 a surprise exhibition of art by Banksy, the Bristolian graffiti artist, was opened at the Bristol City Museum. The amazing popularity of the exhibition took the museum by surprise as nearly 400,000 people queued for up to 5 hours to see the free show which closed on 31st August.
The tower is the Wills Memorial tower of Bristol University. Built after the first world war in gothic style it is probably the biggest clock in the world without a clockface. You only know the time if you hear the bell, Great George, striking the hour!!
