Pikes Peak 70 miles to the southwest, Mount Evans 50 miles due west and Longs Peak shrouded by clouds 70 miles to the northwest. Taken from high ground on the east side of the park overlooking the 880 acre reservoir . Built in 1950 the Cherry Creek reservoir prevents Cherry Creek from flooding. The creek runs through the heart of Denver where it joins the South Platte. CIRES heads to Lake Dillon, drinking supply for the Denver Metro Area, to test water quality. To get to the water, researchers trekked the frozen lake and had to drill through more than a foot of ice. On this trip researchers also gathered water samples that will be analyzed for the presence of pharmaceuticals, a prospect of growing concern in the scientific community. Water treatment facilities currently can't treat water for drugs, the effects of which are uncertain. |
