Ahh, the green fields of England - with a dirty great cement works smack bang in the middle ...
This pano is taken from just above one of Wiltshire's White Horses - large figures cut through the turf exposing the chalk below, leading to a figure you can see for miles. Update: You can actually see two of these horses (including the one here) from Bath on an exceptionally clear day. You can't see Bath in this photo but to see here from Bath see http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=24815&snapshot_id=75061. Cmlbath has taken a small gigapan that shows some of the view and the horse: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=26632. For a closeup of the works, see http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=10255. "Shoelace" is a reference to http://forum.gigapan.org/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=152. |

THIS IS MY FIRST EVER GIGAPAN: The Royal Burgh Standard Bearer James Cheyne casts the Burgh Flag at the culmination of the Common Riding festivities followed by six other standard bearers. The one on this photo is Hammerman Jason Hendrie. (sorry Jason you moved between shots). The Burgh Standard bearer represents the one man (Fletcher) who returned to the town after the Battle of Flodden in 1513, bringing with him an English flag. The ceremony is preceded by one of the largest horse and rider cavalcades in Europe ( up to 600 horses have taken part some years) They leave the town, led by the Standard Bearer, at 7 am and ride the boundaries of the town land, returning at the entrance to Selkirk and then marching behind the bands to the town centre for this moving ceremony. Try http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=26053 and http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=26062 too.http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=25995

Taken sitting on the edge of the escarpment of Salisbury Plain. The horse looks lovely at a distance but when you get up close it is a rather disappointing modern concrete thing rather than chalk. It is probably not terribly old as there is no record of it before 1742 (it says here). As with all these ‘chalk’ figures it has been re-cut many times and the design changed often. Apparently this one used to face the other way. From here you also get a superb view of the cement works. |

Taken from the delightful village of Orta on Lake Orta the monastery island and a gigantic "trojan" horse . OK I cheated a little bit: the horse is on a floating tethered platform which, because of the wind and waves, had moved by the time the camera came to it so now the horse is wading!! Artistic license! See reciprocal from the island at http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=29417 |

A world away from the chaos of the rest of the fair, the finalists in the women's amateur horsemanship competition come forward to receive their awards.
Taken at ISO400 with the Canon G10, then processed with Topaz DeNoise. |

Could have sworn there were a whole bunch of horses in front of me while I was setting up the GigaPan unit. :~) |
