spacer Looks quiet on a Tuesday afternoon, but evenings, especially on the weekends, major traffic delays because of all the stores and restaurants to the west. Across the street is Katz's, a deli, which serves fine blueberry blintzes.

Further to the east on Westheimer is South Main, a major traffic artery.

Crime use to be a major problem in this area, but now because of the major police presence, crime, for the most part, has been controlled and the neighboorhood is now safe.

This, from the 2007 Houston Livestock and Rodeo Media Guide regarding Wild and Free: Created in celebration of the Show’s 60th anniversary in 1992, Ed Hayes’ “Wild and Free” portrays the spirit of freedom through three mares, two colts and a stallion.

There are eight statues in the Carruth Plaza and all of them are unique and extraordinary.

This, adapted from the 2007 Houston Livestock and Rodeo Media Guide regarding Carruth Plaza: Amid native Texas landscaping and decomposed granite pathways, a collection of large-scale bronzes from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo™ call Carruth Plaza at Reliant Park home. Located in a prime location between Reliant Astrodome and Reliant Stadium, just south of Reliant Center, the Plaza was made possible due to a grant from The Wortham Foundation, Inc. Named after Allen H. “Buddy” Carruth, who served as president of both The Wortham Foundation and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Carruth Plaza serves as a tribute to the renowned Houston philanthropist who dedicated many hours to serving the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and the people of Harris County. In addition to naming the Plaza in his honor, a special Carruth Circle features an obelisk topped by a Smithsonian Armillary Sphere. In their space, the sculptures are surrounded by a tranquil setting that includes a flowing stream and “Texas heritage-style” landscaping, with such native Texas plants as cactus, yuccas and live oak trees. With trees and curved limestone walls behind most of the Western art sculptures, areas of seating are placed in close proximity to each work of art for maximum enjoyment.

Taken on a very hot weekend in Houston using a Nikon D70 camera and a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens.

This stitched image was created using the GigaPan Stitcher software and additional details can be seen in the Stitcher Notes.

Note: Reliant Park is home of the Offshore Technology Conference.

This, from the 2007 Houston Livestock and Rodeo Media Guide regarding The Cookie: Summoning weary cowboys to the chuck wagon, “The Cookie” stands ready to ring the dinner bell and, with hand to mouth, to call in the cowboys. Created by Eric Kaposta, the bronze was unveiled in 1997.

There are eight statues in the Carruth Plaza and all of them are unique and extraordinary.

There were numerous ducks and when they saw this GigaPan being created, I am not sure if for them the main attraction was potential food or just watching a 360-panorama being taken.

Due to the clouds, the lighting was only fair.

The panorama was taken with a Nikon D70 and stitched with the GigaPan Stitcher software.

Since this is a 360-degree panorama, a view in Google Earth can be fun and can be found simply by clicking the link, View in Google Earth.

spacer Update: An update from the Houston Chronicle provides a clearer picture of current Government plans for the schools and has been appended to the earlier article which left some needless confusion to arise: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/life/religion/6717563.html

Note: When I first U/L this panorama, it was entitled, Fear ! - 360-Degree Panorama, but that title may add to a sense of being a sensationalist, which I am not except to say that if my church was being shut down by the US Government, I would be a bit fearful.

The news is that the Islamic Education Center in Houston is being seized by the US Government because of alledged illegal connections of the Alavi Foundation (from whom the IEC leases their building from) in New York City to the Iranian government.

From the above Houston Chronicle article: IEC serves as a place of worship, celebration, community programs and study, according to the center's Web site. Its premises are occupied by one of Houston's largest Shia mosques and the Al Hadi School of Accelerative Learning, a full-time private Islamic school for kindergarten through 12th grade.

When this panorama was taken, school kids are inside trying to study and are being protected, but I am sure that there is someone connected to this that has fear of what comes next.

This hand-held 360-degree panorama was taken with a Leica D-Lux 3 and was stitched using the GigaPan Stitcher software. Additional details can be found on Stitcher Notes with information there concerning the GigaPan Stitcher run.
