You are looking North West from the bluff of White Cloud, Kansas over the Missouri river to the state Missouri. Iowa can be seen to the left of the panorama. White Cloud was once a busy port city before the Civil War, but now is well known for the "White Cloud Flea Market" held on the first Sunday of May and the first Sunday of September.

Mushroom Rock is an excellent example of the geological concept of differential erosion. The hardened capstone is protecting softer underlying sediments, in this instance forming a distinctive mushroom-shaped outcropping. Castle Rock is an erosional remnant of Cretaceous Smoky Hill Chalk in southeastern Gove County, Kansas. Historically it was an important landmark on the Butterfield Overland Trail.
