The area where I grew up. Beautiful green tree covered mountains and green grassy valleys. Several logging units of varying ages can be seen. Logging is what sustains the little town. |

A very very windy spot and quite a struggle to hold the tripod steady! And perhaps on this occasion a good example of when Anti Shake / IS can work well with a tripod! But near this spot was once a Roman Signal station, and when you see the huge view that encompasses a long stretch of Hadrian's Wall, then it is easy to see what an important point it was. |

This white oak (Quercus alba) is probably less than a century old, and appears to have spent much of its life cantilevered along the ground. It is near a cliff at the edge of a ridge where thin soils support Dry Oak Forest, a community of white, chestnut, and red oak, with red maple and hop hornbeam.
Notes: The D40 refused to autofocus the first photo, so I manually focused each of the 170 shots. This was even less fun than you might think, and the results are unimpressive. Author: C. Fastie |
