"So what is in those tanks?"
I asked two different people that question, and got the same response. "Nothing" They were literally correct. To several significant decimal places these tanks contain nothing. This represents the majority of the nation's strategic vacuum reserve. vacuum tanks at NASA - AMES. |

Hanger one at NASA Ames Research Center, with Airship Ventures zeppelin in the background.

Antennas at NASA Ames. Note the ladders leasding up both antennas.

An ad hoc crossing of Stevens Creek in Mountain View. I used to live a couple of blocks from Steven's creek, in Los Altos, and there was a half mile section of the creek which I knew well. They would put up a temporar, but high, earth damn at Fremont every year. The idea was to give the water more time to percolate down to recharge the water table and reverse ground water subsidence issue. Playing in the creek is a good thing to do. For kids, and maybe for adults as well. |

The side of Building N226. It says this is the 'Six by Six Supersonic Wind Tunnel' but now it looks like a NASA Education building. The wooden building on the far left is the cooling tower, and it looks like it has been dry for a while.

Hanger 1, Airship Ventures, Hangers 2 and 3. to the left of hangers 2 and 3 is a C130 (Please correct me if I am in error on aircraft id!) |

From the roof of n242 - but not the roof of the tower!
looking east across the San Francisco Bay at the East Bay hills. It was cold and blustery, and a tall ladder was involved to get here. Snow is visible on the hills - the snow line came down to 2000 feet or so. |

The Unitary Plan wind tunnels at NASA Ames research center are a National Civil Engineering landmark. The water cooling facilities are cool. |

This is a 14" gun. That means it fires a shell with a 14" diameter. It appears to be just cast randomly in a former San Francisco Bay mud flat. Pretty freaky! |

gigapan user Dogshrink found a NASA link describing the wind tunnels here:
http://history.nasa.gov/SP-440/ch6-15.htm The first diagram is of the "Ames 3.5-foot hypersonic wind tunnel" and shows the four large vacuum tanks which are just to the left of this, and these high pressure tanks. Straight back are two more vacuum tanks, the one in front is being dismantled. To the right is the 'cyrogenic separation tower and auxiliary equipment building' These are shown in more detail in this gigapan: http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=12016 |
