There's time missing in this GigaPan. Can you find where it disappeared? |

Once again I didn't catch this at the best time of day. Nonetheless this is a spectacular spot, high above Donner Lake. Granite of the Sierra Nevada Range is rounded into domes by glacial scouring and pierced by tunnels of the Union Pacific Railroad. If you look closely there are a number of climbers scaling these faces, as well. |

Ledge trail is a long abandoned trail that runs from the backside of Curry Village up to Glacier Point. About half way up you can cross the creek and climb up the rocks to this spectacular view. At one time power or telephone lines ran up this way, and there are a trio of eyehooks embedded in the rocks, thus my name for this spot, "Eyehook Point". From here you can see down into Yosemite Valley with a panorama that goes from Yosemite Falls to Nevada Fall and everything in between. Royal Arches, Washington Column, North Dome, Tenaya Canyon, Half Dome, Mt Watkins etc.

Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the continental United States with an elevation of 14,497 feet. |

The 4S ranch is on the east side of the Owens Valley at Big Pine. The view from the hills at the base of the Inyo Mountains encompasses views up and down the Owens Valley with the Palisades region of the Sierra Nevada in between and the barren hills at the base of the Inyos to the far right.

Key stratigraphic section that documents the abrupt arrival of the Colorado River in the Laughlin-Bullhead City area approximately 5.59 million years ago. Five strata exposed here document the transition of this basin from a hydrologically closed basin to one containing a very large, sediment laden throughgoing river. The transition involved an initial influx of water associated with an overflowing lake in the basin upstream which culminated in a catastrophic flood through a bedrock divide at the location of Davis Dam. The rapid influx of water and sediment ultimately resulted in a large, deep lake that inundated both Mohave Valley and Cottonwood Valley between 5.59 and 4.1 million years ago. The demise of this large lake preceded the arrival of the throughgoing Colorado River which initially filled the valleys with nearly 300 m of gravel and sand. |
