spacer Kulmbach on a cold winter morning (right after Christmas 2008). I took the panorama from the Plassenburg castle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plassenburg) which looms above the old town.

The panorama was stitched with PTGui and saved as a TIF image. For upload to the Gigapan website I had to reduce the original size from 2.34 GPixels to 0.6 GPixels.
The 432 images were taken with my Lumix FZ28 (at 12x zoom; focal length 35mm equiv.: 347.0 mm) and my homebuilt robotic panorama head.

Some images got lost somehow, so I had to reconstruct these from the neighboring images and a low-resolution overview image (taken at 1x zoom).

Camera make: Panasonic
Camera model: DMC-FZ28
Image size: 3648x2736 (10.0 megapixels)
Capture time: 2008-12-28 11:25:47 - 2008-12-28 12:11:40
Aperture: f/5.6 - f/6.3
Exposure time: 0.0025
ISO: 100
Focal length (35mm equiv.): 347.0 mm

spacer The Old Town Square is the oldest and most important square of the historical Prague. It is surrounded with historical buildings such as the Old Town City Hall with the famous Astronomical Clock, the imposing St. Nicholas Church and Church of Our Lady before Tyn, and many houses and palaces of various architectural styles and colourful history. It has been a centre of Prague Old Town since the middle ages, when it was a market place at the crossing of European merchants´ roads.

Even though it was discovered less than 100 years ago, there are many mysteries surrounding the South Pole. Among the recent mysteries is the location of Old Pole, which was closed in 1974 and has been off limits to would-be explorers from the new station for almost a decade.

There have been three South Pole research stations: Old Pole which was built beginning in the summer of 1956-57, the Dome which was under construction from 1970-74, and dedicated in 1975, and the new elevated station, which was started in 1997 and dedicated on January 12, 2008.

This image shows us checking out the area around Old Pole. This is the first official trip to the site in years. We will be removing the culvert that leads to the entrance and sealing that entrance by filling it with snow. The job is to be completed before the sun sets in 2009.

Old Pole is off limits because the snow that covers it is crushing the station, threatening to bury anyone who ventures inside. The buildings beneath us are collapsing under the weight of 50 year’s of accumulated snow. Before we start this task, we are making sure that it can be safely closed off, and we are figuring out exactly what we need to get the job done.

It seems to many of us who were there that the closing of the entrance to Old Pole ends an important era in Antarctic history. I believe that this is true. It was a sad event in many ways, but the work and courage of the first construction crews and of all of the crews who followed them does not pass out of memory because the buildings of Old Pole are gone from sight.

The 14 images of this panorama were photographed with a Nikon D80 and stitched with Autopano Pro.

spacer I tried using automatic exposure rather than setting it to a locked exposure. Results are evident. You can see where the edges of each individual picture look darker. I guess that this is the only way to learn!! I will keep experimenting.

Update: This barn no longer stands. It was dismantled on the week of Thanksgiving,

spacer Maidstone River England...This image was shot on a Canon 400d DSLR and was the first Gigapan with the new DSLR Mount that I had made. The lens was the standard kit lens 18-55mm. the camera lens was set to 55mm, the rest of the setup was standard stuff. The gigapan worked very well with the extra load with no problems of any kind, I will try it again with a Longer focal lens but i dont think I will go above 105mm. the camaera I used before the 400d was a Canon G9, but was to total happy with the Image that i got and the extra hassle setting up the camera Focus etc...

spacer The original Dallas County courthouse, dubbed "Old Red." It is constructed of Pecos sandstone, Texas red granite, and Arkansas blue granite. The building now houses a museum of Dallas history and culture. As a side note, I have perhaps been gigapanning too much when I feel the urge to remove vegetation in order to get a better shot...

spacer 360 degree Gigapan of St James' churchyard in Old Town Poole. This was taken by Alex Otto of Bournemouth University, and Alice Ralph and Denis Roberts of The Study Gallery of Modern Art. This Gigapan features many points of historical interest - see if you can spot some of them!

While we were photographing this, a man from the church came out and spoke to us. He explained that the church has funding to refurbish the grounds and will be knocking down the external wall that runs around the grassy area. It'll be interesting to go back and do another Gigapan in a year or so once they have finished the refurbishment.
