The Berkely Pit, a former open pit copper mine in Butte, Montana, is approximately 1 mile long and 1/2 mile wide. When mining operations ceased, all dewatering activities also ceased. Consequently, the pit continues to fill with groundwater. The water in the pit is acidic and contains high concentrations of certain pollutants, including iron, copper, zinc, sulfates and arsenic. This picture was taken from the visitor's viewing platform in July 2009. For additional information: www.pitwatch.org |

Overview of Main volleyball court. Cheering crowds, final game of the 2009 AVP Manhattan Beach Open Beach Volleyball Tournament. The 'Wimbledon' of beach Volleyball. Beach Volleyball got its start on the sands of Manhattan Beach. This is #3 of my little AVP Manhattan Beach Open 2009 vingnette. Not meant for moving objects, the GigaPan allows peoples bodies to do many strange things (some of which I have removed, can you see where?). 80 Gigapan images, Nikon P5100, copyright John Post |

The open pit at the top of the Homestake Gold Mine in Lead, South Dakota beautifully exposes a series of Tertiary rhyolite dikes that were the focus of the hydrothermal system that formed this rich gold deposit. The open pit is no longer active, but it is a great opportunity for geologists to get a glimpse into the uppermost crust of the Earth.
Note that when viewing this in Google Earth, I have placed it in a position that corresponds with the shooting location as seen in the current satellite imagery. Unfortunately, the digital elevation model and the satellite imagery are not well registered at this time, so although I took this GigaPan at the edge of the open pit, it appears to be quite a distance from the edge when one compares it with the topography in Google Earth. |

This is my second Gigapan that I have done. It was bigger than I should have tried to get, plus I was in a rush. Didnt turn out quite the way I wished. Practice makes perfect. almost.

Piles of overburden stripped to reveal the ore at the Ajo, Arizona open pit copper mine dominate the horizon south of town. They also offer insight into the geology of the mine. The yellow streaked piles near the middle of this GigaPan are composed of some of the sulfide mineral (mostly pyrite) bearing rocks associated with the ore zone. Unfortunately I couldn't find a good vantage point to shoot a GigaPan of the mine itself, so the overburden piles will have to pass as a substitute. |

Overview of winners Gibbs & Rosenthall ('rosie') and crowd celebrating winning the AVP Manhattan beach Open, Beach volleyball tournament July 2009. The 'Wimbldon' of beach volleyball is always "the one to win" on the AVP tour. Last scene on the center court before the stands empty and the riggers start taking everything down and packing it up. This ends the four image GigaPan vingnet of the 2009 Manhattan Beach open. 64 GigaPan images, Nikon P5100, Copyright John Post |
