This is a panorama made by stitching together two old postcards which were postmarked way back in 1909. The photographs were shot from two close but separate positions so it is impossible to get a perfect stitch. For stitching I used the free version of DoubleTake (hence the watermark).
Ok, lets go on a virtual scavenger hunt. To participate you need to create a Gigapan.org account (free). Then navigate back to this Gigapan image and take a "snapshot" of each item you find below. In this panorama you will find: - at least two people - at least two horses or mules - my girlfriend's old house - train cars - Gregg's Warehouse (Gregg's warehouse pictured in the panorama belonged to Albert M. Gregg. You can view a picture of him in an old ad here: http://i43.tinypic.com/29lxrfa.png You can see a picture of the old A.M. Gregg storefront here: http://i40.tinypic.com/29giut1.jpg - 3 and possibly 4 churches (extra credit if you can name them) - a ladder - two coal mine tipples (extra credit if you name the coal mines to which they belong) - two houses with rain barrels - a barn - at least 1 coal barge - a saltbox - three bridges - Whiskey Point - an outhouse - a railroad tower - a factory - laundry - the McGough Residence (oldest part built in 1802) was the oldest brick building in town until it was replaced by the architectural masterpiece known presently as the Monongahela Senior - the Hotel Main - the village of Axleton - worker houses built by Liggett Spring and Axle Co. - a gas lamp - River Hill Double extra credit if you take a snapshot of something else you find interesting in the Panorama! I will identify a few of the items found in the list every day over the next week. (I want to give you a chance to find them yourself!) P.S. Many of the snapshots have comments. You identify the ones with comments by the little comment indicator (looks like a text bubble used in a comic book) at the lower right side of snapshot thumbnail. Or just check out the comments page where everybody's comments are listed together: http://gigapan.org/conversations/126457/ Thanks to those who have left comments so far, and I've learned a few things that I never knew before - well worth checking out! Every Sunday for a year and a half, starting in October 1997, a group of Pittsburgh metal artists sneaked into the abandoned Carrie Furnace site, along with their tools and equipment. They used materials found on site to create a 45' tall deer head. The group - Industrial Arts Collective - is currently working on a large scale sculpture on the former Jones and Laughlin and LTV mill sites, on the South Side of Pittsburgh.
