Every Sunday for a year and a half, starting in October 1997, a group of Pittsburgh metal artists sneaked into the abandoned Carrie Furnace site, along with their tools and equipment. They used materials found on site to create a 45' tall deer head. The group - Industrial Arts Collective - is currently working on a large scale sculpture on the former Jones and Laughlin and LTV mill sites, on the South Side of Pittsburgh. We shot this from Mt. Washington, looking down at The Point (where the Monongahela & Allegheny Rivers join to form the Ohio), from which the fireworks were launched. Our panorama includes glimpses of the crowds at The Point and in the Northside (near the stadiums).
We shot two panoramas in quick succession and chose selected images from each set to put this mosaic together. Including the crowd around us in the picture turned out to be a good decision, I think. What's present in this photo: Schenley Farms, in the foreground tower at the corner of S Bellefield Ave & 5th Ave? Carnegie Library: the building at center-right with twin towers (towers since torn down). Phipps Conservatory, to the right, beyond. Schenley Hotel, which later became the William Pitt Union. What's missing from this photo, because they were built later (from L to R): Schenley High School, St. Paul's Cathedral, Mellon Institute, Carnegie Mellon University, Heinz Chapel, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Cathedral of Learning, Pittsburgh Athletic Association, Soldiers & Sailors Museum, UPMC hospitals! This photograph was provided by Miriam Meislik and Ed Galloway of the Archives Service Center, University Library, University of Pittsburgh. http://www.library.pitt.edu/libraries/archives/archives.html Laura Tomokiyo and I rephotographed this same view in 2010: http://gigapan.org/gigapans/45091/ , or click on "View in Google Earth" link to compare a more modern view. This 360 degree GigaPan from a trail in Schenley Park includes the vine covered bank uphill, and the mid canopy of the forest downhill. This early morning shot was taken with fixed exposure (1/3 sec, f8) and automatic focus. The forest canopy includes red and white oak, Norway maple, sycamore, and tulip tree. |

The pit and the arena at the Pittsburgh FIRST robotics competition during the alliance selection phase. Almost all the teams are in the stands and watching the selection process. The alliance selection is a crucial part of the competition - the top 8 seeded teams from the qualifying matches choose partners with which they form an alliance - giving the chosen teams a chance to be on the winning alliance. |

The intersection of Forbes Ave. and Murray Ave. forms the heart of Squirrel Hill, a neighborhood a mile from Carnegie Mellon's campus which is home to many students and professors. |

This gigapan nearly matches the perspective of another, shot from a bit down the hill in 1897: http://gigapan.org/gigapans/39820/ See if you can identify buildings in this photo that were present in 1897. |
