I am a Point Park University student majoring in photography. I am attending one of the first classes for the gigapan and this is one of the pictures I did for fun.
This picture was taken in my Grandparents home taken in a room called 'the gun room.' My Grandparents are collectors of many things and don't throw anything away. If you look at the picture or even look at my tags you will notice many things like two DVD players, an old record player that is unknown whether it works, a tape deck system (although they don't have any tapes anymore that they know of.) There are also many little nic-nacs that were obtained in someway at some point and since they don't get rid of anything they are displayed on one of the shelves.
My Grandmother, Renee, passed away on August 31st, 2009. I have a separate gigapan of her fairy collection which resided all over the house except this room, 'the gun room,' because she left this room for my Grandfather to store his small collections. The videos, if you look close enough, a majority of them are still sealed and have never been opened. My Grandmother was a shopaholic and loved to spend money. The house is full of all kinds of things that have never been used like toothpastes, lotions, toilet paper, ect. These videos are just a small collection of her compulsiveness to shop. Notice how the only videos that are not wrapped up are war videos. Those belong to my Grandfather. Like most elderly men, my Grandfather is very interested in war and has a small collection of books and videos that are on the left side of the screen. I also tagged some of them.
My Grandfather collected all the boats that are spread through out the picture. Although he didn't actually build them, he did like to collect them already built. These boats are also not very expensive like most model boats because all these boats my Grandfather found either at a yard sale, flee market, or at a discount store like the Goodwill or Gabriel Brothers. My Grandfather really isn't a big collector of boats but my Grandmother gave him this room for his guns and he decided to fill it with boats. My Grandfather always found these boats to be interesting and had a moment of compulsion for boats and used them to help dress up his gun room. He doesn't collect them anymore and he really doesn't know much about them, so I did my own research.
One of the boats I found on the internet, the Amerigo Vespucci. Amerigo Vespucci named after Florentinian Amerigo Vespucci (1454-1512) and for whom the Americas are named after because he claims to have descovered America one year before Columbus. The ship was built in 1930 at the Italian Naval Shipyard of Castellammare di Stabia (Naples). It can fit a crew of about 300 and has 74 cannons. It is about 101 meters (331 feet) in full length and 15.5 meters (51 feet) in width and It weighs over 4100 tons. The ship has three hulls with 26 sails. Another one of the boats, which I tagged, is the Black Pearl from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. It is actually my favorite and found it very interesting that it is the Black Pearl. I also found out it is one of my Grandfather's favorites which is why it has its own little spot at the top of the mantel with the side of the ship facing us, instead of being squeezed in with the other boats where it is hard to see them. Although it isn't one of the expensive models of the boat that I found online, it is still very interesting to look at.
