spacer Located in the Southwestern United States Verde Valley 1.5 hours north of Phoenix Arizona is one of the best preserved Indian cliff dwellings in North America.

Montezuma Castle was one of the first four National Monuments dedicated in 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt.

The castle was built and used by the Pre-Columbian Sinagua people circa 700 AD. The Hopi Indians, and some Navajos can trace their roots to immigrants from the Verdi Valley and Beaver Creek area. Some tribe members return on occasion to these older sites for religious ceremonies. Early European Americans (1850's) named these area after the Aztec emperor of Mexico "Montezuma", thinking the emperor had been involved in the construction of the site.
This 20 room 5 level high-rise apartment, nestled into a towering limestone cliff, tells a 1,000 year-old story of ingenuity and survival by the Sinagua Indian in an unforgiving desert landscape.
It is believed the Sinagua women actually built the entire structure and did all the farming as well.
Getting to the first level of the Castle is done using small holes in the floor of level two. These two dark, windowless rooms have low ceilings, requiring anyone but a child to squat low to move through them. They may have been used to store food, water and equipment for the residents who lived in the Castle.
The interior of the Castle is very dark. Most of the walls are covered in thick layers of soot deposited from hundreds of years of cooking and warming fires lit in each room. This soot covers layers of hand-coated adobe plaster used to seal and protect the structure. Fingerprints of the Castle's original inhabitants are still visible on walls containing original Sinagua plaster. These walls would have been continuously maintained by the Sinagua, with fresh applications of plaster covering older applications.

Giant Barack Obama bust stops in Austin - 20-foot tall concrete sculpture makes stop on way to Presidents Park in South Dakota.
By Claire Osborn AUSTIN AMERICAN-STATESMAN STAFF Monday, June 08, 2009

President Barack Obama's concrete head rested peacefully on an open-bed trailer outside Vino Vino wine bar on Guadalupe Street on Sunday evening. The 20-foot tall sculpture of the president had just been hauled from Houston (note: we shot this image at Adickes' Houston studio late in afternoon the Saturday before this article was written).

Its creator, 82-year-old artist David Adickes, is traveling with the 3½-ton bust and grinned as he looked at the head as it was parked on the street. "Most people just ogled it on the highway," he said. "Only one guy gave us the finger."

The sculpture began a 30-city tour Friday in Pearland, near Houston, and will end up in Presidents Park near Deadwood, S.D., joining the other 42 giant-size presidential busts Adickes has already made. He said he hopes to make it to Mount Rushmore by June 18 before taking it to the park he owns. Other cities on the tour include Fort Worth, St. Louis, Chicago, Minneapolis and Milwaukee.

Barack Obama came to Prague for a couple days last week. Coincidentally, he came at a moment when there is actually no Czech Government - it was dissolved a couple weeks ago by our local slime balls. (It's a stroke of irony, as Czechs are hosting the presidency of the EU. But I digress).

Thousands of people - probably around 30 thousand, came to see Barack Obama speak on the Prague Castle Square (Hradcanske Namesti). Security was predictably very very tight. No throwable objects were allowed, except phones, shoes, and cameras. No SLR cameras were allowed for some reason. As a result, the panorama you see here was shot without my normal equipment. Instead I had to borrow my friend's camera. This image was made in 75 shots. It is a fullly spherical panorama (except for the bottom). Be sure to click the link above to see the "spherical" version. It's worth it I promise ;-)

SculpturWorx Studio in Houston, Texas is one of our favorite places to take photographs. As soon as we co-purchased a beta version Gigapan we started planning a SculptrWorx panorama.

The parking lot of the studio is full of amazing concrete sculptures. Each of the 20-foot tall Presidents heads weighs 3½-tons. The Beatles sculptures in the background are nearly 40 feet high and weighing close to 5 tons each.

The creator of these amazing sculptures is 82-year-old artist David Adickes, David is Houston’s unofficial “artist in residence.” His sculpture portfolio includes a 67-feet tall Sam Houston statue near Huntsville, “The Virtuoso” a 36-foot concrete sculpture of a cello player, and statue of an ex-girlfriend, who used to be a Playboy model.

Adickes is also an excellent musician and writer. He made his living primarily through painting until 10 years ago. His oils and sculptures are displayed in ten major art museums across America and in many countries, as well as private collections.
