One week before world leaders converged on Pittsburgh to discuss the global economy, students from across the region held a summit to target issues important to them.
Sponsored by the World Affairs Council, the Pittsburgh G-20 Student Summit was held on Sept. 17 at Fox Chapel Area High School. More than 300 teens from 15 to 20 schools debated topics that range from policy-making to environmental concerns. One of the schools participating was Propel Andrew Street High School. This event was so popular that its 500 slots were filled by students from about 30 school districts three days after it was announced. More than 1,500 other students participated via video conference or webcast.
In addition, students in three countries -- Johannesburg, South Africa; Sao Paulo, Brazil; and Milan, Italy, also participated via video conference.
The 12 schools participating via video conference were able to both see and be seen, hear and be heard. Those using webcasts were able to send e-mails to ask questions.
The program began with three keynote speakers: Steven Clemons, director, American Strategy Program and senior fellow, New America Foundation; Juan Delgado, chief economist, Spanish National Commission for Competition; and David Shorr, program officer, Stanley Foundation.
