Many of the test tubes in this growing room contain tissue culture propagules/sterile culture seedlings of many of Hawai`i's rarest plants. A number of the species represented here have fewer than 10 individual plants remaining in the wild; a few with no known living wild specimens. Hawai`i comprises just 0.2% (1/500) of the land area of the United States, but harbors nearly 1/3 of the threatened and endangered plant and animal species in the entire country.
I set the white balance and exposure for this panorama, and used auto focus. There are a few auto focus artifacts evident - see if you can find them. |

This diminutive endemic Hawaiian lobelia, Cyanea asarifolia, is now presumed extinct in the wild. It's range was restricted to the base of 3,000 ft. cliffs at the "Blue Hole" at the base of Mt. Wai`ale`ale, the rainiest spot on Earth. These plantlets, when grown to sufficient size in a greenhouse, may one day be planted back into this species' native range to attempt to reestablish a wild, self-sustaining population.
I paused the panorama after the first frame, and moved frame by frame with the "forward" button so that I could use manual focus. I went from 224 frames taken with the Canon S5-IS 8Mpixel camera in an earlier version, to 54 frames with my Olympus E-510 10 Mpixel DSLR in this one. |
