There is a parable in Matthew 25 that speaks of feeding the poor. I believe that these words from 2000 years ago, as well as words from other religions of the world, create a foundation of the rich giving food to the poor and of wealthy nations providing sustenance to the poor nations that are in need. I am impressed by what Palmer Memorial Episcopal Church is doing and have created this panorama to show others what some people in Houston are doing on the local level to give nourishment to those who are in need. Since this church is across the stree from Rice University, I have added it to the collection of Rice GigaPans, which can be accessed via this link: http://tinyurl.com/RiceUniversity For this hand-held panorama, I used a Nikon D70 with a Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 lens and was stitched with the GigaPan Stitcher. The photos were taken over a period of two days. |

Because of the very nice weather, I wanted to set up behind Duncan Hall and take a panorama of the Engineering Quad.
Note: the panorama that I had hoped to take on 10/18/2008 has now been taken and can be seen at: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=12141. Since it was Saturday morning, I was only expecting a few sleepy students to wander by. Was I totally surprised by what I saw when I drove up! This pano was taken about 10AM and all the excitement was to begin at 11 and an Astronaut was to speak at 1PM to about 1200 expected high-school students. Shades of Harry Potter... as you can see, I caught Cyrus looking over at Cyrus :) Here is a link to the Sally Ride Science Festival Information: http://www.sallyridescience.com/festivals/08rice1018 |

Note: A better view and from the south can be seen here: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=25162 As can readily be seen, I am wearing what I won in a contest concerning GigaPans created by Kilgore661, which were taken in and around Bath, England. As the winner, I was given the option of wearing a T-Shirt extolling the virtues of Bath or a Cuban Cigar... I took the T-Shirt :) Lots of important discoveries have occured in this building and I am sure that more will come. What is coming shortly is a south view of M.D. Anderson Biological Laboratories Building with a Rice Grad Student in it. |

Latest News from the BBC (12/13/09): http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8407139.stm Last year after I had received my GigaPan robot, I was fortunate to come upon the Sally Ride Science Festival and had taken a GigaPan (http://gigapan.org/gigapans/11021/). Today, I was again lucky and arrived to discover that this was the day for the 2009 Festival. This panorama could easily become a big-time favorite of mine for it has lots to see... a good size moon rock, two solar telescopes and one of Rice's finest, a RPD officer, who I have had the pleasure of knowing for several years, who you can see in one of the snapshots. This panorama is comprised of 26 photographs, which were taken with a Nikon D-70 using a Nikkor 28-80 f/3.3-5.6G lens and was stitched using the GigaPan Stitcher software. Note: This panorama can be seen in Google Earth as a curved panorama on a curved surface by clicking the link, View in Google Earth (assuming that you have Google Earth installed on your computer). Additional information can be found when clicking Stitcher Notes ... this panorama was taken in 40 seconds. |

Taken on the south side of McNair Hall from Jamail Plaza where we see Saskia holding back the bear market and Cristina catching a ride on the bull market.
My Goal for this panorama was to have it as a continuation of the Faces I panorama: (http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=15137) and we see two Rice people, Saskia and Cristina, in this panorama. Each of the two Faces panoramas contain four snapshots identifying faces on either side of the entry way. This view in Google Earth is worth an effort :) An earlier GigaPan from this exact location is available here: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?auth=45d74723c42a181ec9ba03576d65a0af |

My goal was to take a panorama encompassing Herring Hall, Brochstein Pavilion and Fondren Library; however, as I was setting up the robot, Natalie walked by and asked me a few questions as to what I was doing and after answering those questions, I asked her if she wanted to participate and this wonderful panorama is the result of her answer.
Play the game: how many versions of Natalie are there in this panorama? If you answer correctly, then how many trees? If you answer correctly, then advance to GO :) |

Both of the girls enjoyed this and I did too. They picked the pose themselves, which is always cool.
I believe that I had the Leica set properly on exposure lock, but as you can see, there are some hot spots in the sky... so much so that a great amount of the pano was eliminated as unacceptable.. leaving only the the good part. The original plan was to start at the top of Willy and continue to sweep to the current right side. I will try this later and later in the afternoon to capture the colors that are so beautiful. |

Oral Roberts is up and Rice is pitching and I was MOST fortunate to have been able to capture this sequence.
Single shot, hand-held and no Photoshop except to assemble the image. |
