spacer October 2008 from Dundry Hill. Attempting to get a good shot of the two bridges in line I took these 9 shots without a Gigapan and stitched them together with Gigapan software. I'm waiting for the SLR version to come out and I'll have the first one available!! spacer Clifton Bridge spans the river Avon and connects the City of Bristol to Leigh Woods in Somerset. It was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and completed after his death in 1864. He won a competition to design a bridge here, but because the powers that be didn't believe that such a span could be built, he had to build a brick abutment on the Leigh Woods side to reduce the span. The chains used were second hand having been used on the original Hungerford bridge over the Thames in London. The river here is tidal although the sea (Bristol Channel) is over 5 miles downstream. This is why the water is kept in Bristol Docks by lock gates (the floating harbour) otherwise all craft ended up resting on the mud at low tide. They had to have extra strong hulls hence the phrase "shipshape and Bristol fashion!'See:http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27492 for a distant view from Dundry hill. spacer Selkirk Common Riding is a commemoration of the loss of the young men of Selkirk (Scotland) at the Battle Of Flodden on 9th September 1513. Legend has it that only one returned carrying a flag from one of the English armies. The flag casting ceremony held in the town square ends with two minutes silence followed by the playing of "The Floors of the Forest" a lament written for the men lost in the battle. This ceremony is preceded by the Riding of the Marches which is a ride round the town boundaries by the largest cavalcade of horses and riders in Europe (up to 650 riders have been in the cavalcade in past years). The ride is led by the Burgh Standard bearer carrying the town flag. After returning to the town they process behind the bands to the Market Place for this ceremony.

The trouble with getting Gigapan of this ceremony is that the whole event is over in about 20 minutes and so the 800 pics suggested by Gigapan at 550mm would have taken longer than the event to photograph. I compromised by zooming out to around 200mm so as to take fewer snaps in the time and therefor managed to get three gigapans shot. There is a problem with some of the elements which must be due to camera shake as I reduced the time between pictures to .8 sec. My next shots will be landscapes which don't move away after half an hour!! However as a first try I'm not too disappointed. Try http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=26053 and http://share.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=26062 too. See Video of the ceremony at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CPtceF7L9Cs

I have cropped and adjusted contrast to cut through the haze. Camera is Canon SX1 IS , 125 pictures are stitched to make this picture. A little hazy still but I'm watching the visibility and will be back when Wales is crisp and clear!! spacer A shot on an overcast day of Bristol floating harbour, looking down on The SS Great Britain (The first iron hulled, screw propellor driven liner) designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel. Next to it is the Matthew, a replica of the ship in which John Cabot sailed on his discovery of North America in 1497. The harbour is called the "floating harbour" because the river here is tidal and the water is held in by locks. I forgot to set this to save as a tiff so that I could make adjustments and it took so long to stitch that it will have to wait. This shot is 600 superfine, large JPEGs and took 15 hours to stitch. I seem to be getting better and working at the lowest iso rating with no image stabilisation has greatly improved the definition. A shot twice as wide, taking in much more of the harbour, is in the offing when we get the next sunny day!! Here is the first attempt http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27418

Apart from the time and the imac display, at least three things have moved before the second picture was taken see if you can find them and let me know . spacer This small giglepan was taken when the clouds were scudding around so I decided to do it quickly by zooming out and taking fewer shots. If we get a clear sky I'll go for a really high res 270 degree version. Here is one http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27418

spacer The Wills Memorial Building was built using funds supplied by the Wills tobacco family and finished in 1926. It is part of Bristol University and stands at the top of Park Street in Bristol. See the small pic of the tower at the bottom right.
This is my first 360 degree panorama and so is experimental. It was taken from the top of a 3 metre stand which I trundled up the tower. See also http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=24574 and http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=27492 There's actually very much more to see on this Gigapan than you may at first think. Explore Bristol! A much better version is a 360 degree shot from a 6 metre stand showing even more. See it at at http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/33892/
