The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of PIttsburgh holds its annual retreat each fall at the Pymatuning Laboratory of Ecology in Linesville PA. During the retreat students and postdocs present aspects of their research in a poster session, which is held outside at the housing site when the weather is nice. The housing site is on the shore of Pymatuning lake - the distant shore in the background is in Ohio.

This ant is from the species Proceratium MG03 which is thought to be a specialized predator of spider eggs.
This Nano Gigapan is of the front view of the ants head. It is magnified 600x using a scanning electron microscope. The ant was given to us to image by Brian Fisher, an Entomologist at the California Academy of Sciences. This Nano Gigapan is composed of 143 pictures. This Gigapan is part of the NanoGigaPan project. Which is working to take high resolution images of very small things. Read more on the project blog at http://nanogigapan.blogspot.com and see more of our work on the gigapan site at http://gigapan.org/profiles/mollyg For some optical images of this particular ant species, please visit ant web. http://www.antweb.org/description.do?rank=species&name=mg03&genus=proceratium&project=madants |

CIRES heads to Lake Dillon, drinking supply for the Denver Metro Area, to test water quality. To get to the water, researchers trekked the frozen lake and had to drill through more than a foot of ice. On this trip researchers also gathered water samples that will be analyzed for the presence of pharmaceuticals, a prospect of growing concern in the scientific community. Water treatment facilities currently can't treat water for drugs, the effects of which are uncertain. |

Hawaii Pacific University Modern Media Systems class on the Fort Street Mall in Downtown Honolulu. Question of the day: how can a collaboration that includes Carnegie Mellon University, NASA, GOOGLE, National Geographic, and faculty and students at Hawaii Pacific University expand our understanding of modern media systems? In other words, what emerging, unique potentials are being leveraged by these institutions and their communities in our network of networks project? In part this image constitutes an exploration and manifestation of image-making technologies that provide opportunities for meta-connectivity and global community building. A compelling aspect of the global connection project is its attention to transparency. Transparency of technology, transparency of process, and drill down ability in the composite image itself.. |

360° panorama of the hominids chamber of the Museum of Earth Sciences at the University of Silesia, Sosnowiec, Poland.
It is very interesting to view this panorama in GoogleEarth with "3D buildings" layer on. |
