Cooper Bay is an exposed tri-lobed bay at the southeast extreme of South Georgia. The rocks get interesting in this area. In the panorama, the right side of the bay has sedimentary rocks like the ones in Gold Harbor. Igneous rocks dominate the right side of the bay. Between them, in a region called the Cooper Bay Dislocation Zone, the layers of earth were dragged sideways a few kilometers creating tight folds and shearing the rocks. Finally, the glaciers that were here have retreated over thousands of years leaving the sculpted landscape that you see. |

Taken near Letaba rest camp in the Elephants RiverElephants are the largest land animals. The elephant's gestation period is 22 months, the longest of any land animal. At birth it is common for an elephant calf to weigh 120 kilograms (260 lb). They typically live for 50 to 70 years, but the oldest recorded elephant lived for 82 years. The largest elephant ever recorded was shot in Angola in 1956. This male weighed about 12,000 kilograms (26,000 lb), with a shoulder height of 4.2 metres (14 ft), a metre (yard) taller than the average male African elephant. Healthy adult elephants have no natural predators, although lions may take calves or weak individuals. They are, however, increasingly threatened by human intrusion and poaching. --Wikipedia-- Panorama size 389 megapixels (now Jpeg)Focal Length 565.2mm H overlap 9.5 to 13.3 V overlap 6.4 to 13.2 Input Images 45 15 x 3 |

This series of two roof-top shots show animals in their natural habitat and demonstrate how well their skin color and texture work at hiding them in a wide view. I just put the Gigapan device directly on top of the roof in both cases and idled the car. |

This village of white-washed, thatched cottages has South Africa’s only slave freedom memorial. Moravian missionaries founded Elim in 1824 and named the village after the place where the Israelites rested after crossing the Red Sea. In addition to Gospel teaching, they mastered crafts such as thatching and polony-making for which the people of Elim are still renowned.
Many of the country’s rarest plant species are indigenous and the town has a thriving wild flower export industry. The Old Mill Tea Room is popular for its products made from flour ground at the Mission’s Mill. The Old Water Mill built in 1833 has the largest wooden water-wheel in South Africa and is still in use. The mission church in the centre of the village is a National Monument. Elim has the only monument honoring the liberation of slaves in all of South Africa. For more info see http://www.danger-point-peninsula.co.za/elim.shtml |
