This is the view from the southern ramparts of the fort. Completed in 1870, this is one of five forts spaced a mile apart and all built at the same time along a ridge running East-West to the North of Portsmouth - an important naval base. The fort is now one of two run by the Peter Ashley Activity Centres charity: http://www.peterashleyactivitycentres.co.uk/Fort_Purbrook1.html.
The weather was extremely challenging. Strong winds meant that even though I was using a heavy tripod I had to hold it down to stop the wind blowing it over, and the light seemed to change every 30 seconds. A bit tricky that - when a big pano takes 40 minutes to shoot with the gigapan. After four hours of shooting I only managed to get one 360° and a couple of smaller ones. After all the exertion of completing a 360° in the sea gale, I decided to take it easy and have a bit of fun: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=11299. |
