Opening of the Q-span bridge, a vital link in the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway™, the 320-mile corridor that lies within a hidden landscape once traversed by the little known 1830s-era Pennsylvania Main Line Canal. The Greenway links outdoor recreation, historic preservation and interpretation, environmental stewardship, and economic enhancement through 16 counties in southwestern and south central PA.

Carbonate sedimentologists will know and love this one - it's one of the classic world-class localities for understanding the geology of Permian-aged reef complexes. |

On the day my brother and I hiked up the Abol Trail to Baxter Peak on Mount Katahdin, the clouds were low all around the mountain. At the top, though, the wind on the north side of the mountain would occasionally create fleeting but incredible vistas --- appreciated all the more because of their brief appearances. Baxter Peak, the highest point on Mount Katahdin, is the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, which stretches from here to northen Georgia. The sharp ridge on the right is "The Knife Edge", one of New England's most challenging hikes --- the trail is only a few feet across in places with cliffs thousands of feet deep on either side.
