Taken on a cold October afternoon (10/17/09) overlooking Turtle Pond from a Belvedere Castle overlook, this is one of the largest GigaPans I've taken yet. Almost 1150 images large, this took an entire afternoon to stitch using the newest GigaPan software (version 1.0). Note the top of the castle spire -- those are the instruments which record the official New York City weather. I'm sure this GigaPan would look better on a sunny day -- but there was something very nice about the windy autumn day that I think is well captured in this photograph. Also, the water is stripped in this image because the wind was really swirling and blowing the water around in all sorts of directions.
When it was built, the view from Belvedere Castle provided a vista over the rectangular receiving reservoir, which has been replaced by the Great Lawn, an oval of turf with eight baseball diamonds, loosely defined by plantings of trees in clumps in the manner of the English landscape garden, and, at the foot of Vista Rock, the Turtle Pond, redesigned in 1997 as a naturalistic planting, in which no single vantage-point reveals the water's full extent. Sunken concrete shelving at varying depths provide ideal water depths for shoreline plants such as lizard's tail, bullrush, turtlehead, and blueflag iris. The success of habitat for birds, insects, amphibians, and reptiles is embodied in sightings of species of dragon-fly not previously sighted in Central Park. Every Columbus Day weekend, my mother’s side of our family congregates in Quebec City for Canadian Thanksgiving. My extended family also owns camp property in a fantastic town, Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval, just twenty minutes outside of the city. Adjacent to their land sits la Rivière Richelieu, a tributary to Rivière Montmorency (just a couple hundred meters downstream). When I bought the GigaPan, I had this very spot in mind and I think the shot came out fantastic. I created a Photosynth here last year (http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=dd8284a5-00c2-4db6-aa1b-50d2c06596a0) but the Gigapan came out even better. Photos taken October 11, 2009. Spencer Island is one of the best places in the Snohomish River Estuary to view waterfowl and shorebirds. Deer, coyote, river otter, and a host of small mammals and amphibians also inhabit the large island. The island has a dike top trail system, which provides scenic views of the wetlands, sloughs and mountains.
The island is co-owned by Snohomish County and the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Snohomish County owns the south half of the island, while WDFW owns the north half. Park History Spencer Island lies in the heart of the Snohomish River Estuary, an ecosystem formed by mixing a freshwater system (the Snohomish River) and a saltwater system (Port Gardner Bay). A dike was built out of earth and wood around the island in the early 1930’s for flood control and the island was converted to agricultural use. Most recently, James Scott Rhodes farmed the island, raising over 400 head of cattle. A barn previously stood near the park entrance and served many generations of farmers. Legend has it that Tom Mormon, a farmer, rolled the barn on log skids across the island to its previous location. The barn fell down during a wind storm in 2006. |

This was taken September 5th from the scenic lookout off I-90 near George, WA. The banding is from the clouds moving across the sun while the GigaPan was doing its thing. The wind was 15MPH gusting to 30MPH for the last half of the panorama, and I had to stand and hold the camera and tripod because the wind blew it over. Fortunately I was standing next to it and was able to catch the tripod and save my gear. |

Labor Day weekend on Lake Shasta... the water level is much lower than normal this year. (Shasta is a major water source for Northern CA, and the water level is dropping about 5" per day! Each of the lines on the bank is one day's worth of erosion from the level dropping. Anyone who does not believe that California has an impending water crisis should see this.) The scene was surreal, but very relaxing. Check out the doppelgängers in the boat and on the water. |

Rock Springs at Kelly Park, officially in Apopka Florida just Northwest of Orlando is just one of the many beautiful natural springs in the central part of the state. The clear cold water offers visitors an invigorating break from the hot summer days. The spring issues forth from a cave from deep underground and has such a high flow rate that it has created a comfortably wide stream that meanders for probably about a half a mile. Tubing, snorkling, floating or just swimming down the run is obviously the number one activity at the park. Another favorite pastime is seaching the stream bed for fossilized shark teeth, prehistoric remnants of when the entire area was at the bottom of a shallow sea. Pack a lunch if you come as the nearest good services are quite a few miles away. Tube rentals are available on the road outside the park. Hiking trails, a campground and sinkholes are also found at the park. |

Addison Oktoberfest 2008 - September 18 - 21, 2008
I shot this yesterday evening on the first day of Addison's Octoberfest. It was still a little early so not many people are around. The guy in the suit with all the medals showed up after I shot the GigaPan so I backed the robot up and reshot him. My friend Joe has a new GigaPan also and we set his up and shot as well. You can see his gigapan unit on the far left. This GigaPan is 7 images high and 63 images wide, 441 total images. Tomorrow I shoot a Balloon Festival, so check back in a few days. Please bookmark this image if you like it or leave me a comment. http://www.addisontexas.net/events/Oktoberfest/ More than 60,000 fans of polka, German food and Paulaner Bier will gather in Addison?s spectacular Addison Circle Park for four days of music, folk dancing, sing-alongs, children?s entertainment and more. Addison?s four-day, authentic German festival is one of the largest Oktoberfest festivals outside of the famed Munich celebration. |

Little Corona Beach in Corona del Mar. I'd like to personally thank the men who didn't seem to get why no one else was standing in front of the camera. I knew I was getting into a tough to stitch situation with the time of day involved. Still, I like how it turned out. Now if only the Beta Imager could be updated to shoot in rows instead of columns, I'd have a much more usefull device. Such is the life of a beta unit. |
