We crossed the Wooly Gut from West Falkland, and we landed on West Point Island on a bright Sunday morning. Land Rovers took us across the island to these grassy cliffs that overlook the Atlantic Ocean. Here we found a colony of Rockhopper Penguins and Black-browed Albatross. I can understand the how the island got its original Spanish name, Isla Remolinos, which means Albatross Island.
The 1255 hectare island is a sheep ranch run by Lily and Roddy Napier who are descendants of folks who settled here in the 1860's. After our encounter with the albatrosses, we returned to the east side of the island. We visited the large comfortable farmhouse where the Napiers served an excellent tea. Lily and Roddy, thank you for your hospitality. I hope that you enjoy this panorama. |

Jonathan Minard and I went to Allegheny County Airport (AGC) in West Mifflin, PA to take a Gigapan of the building and runways. While we were there, we met this guy Mike from the Civil Air Patrol. He took us back onto the runway to see the airplanes and runway up close! Big thanks to him!!!

West Point Island is just off the northwest corner of West Falkland Island. It is the last day of landings on our cruise, and the weather is warm and sunny, which is a bright contrast from our landings in Antarctica and South Georgia.
We will be looking for the Black-browed Albatrosses and the Rock-hopper Penguins which breed on the other side of the island. There are other birds here, including caracaras and vultures. |

The West Virginia state capitol building. Auto exposure didn't do this panorama any favors. The second attempt (http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=6662) came out a little better, but darker. Created from 35 photos (7x5). |

Looking east from the sideling hill outlook on I68, about 10 miles west of Hancock. To the far left in the distance is Pennsylvania, directly in front is Maryland, and off to the right is West Virgina. |

Sunday afternoon scene of people ice skating. This temporary ice skating rink is set up at the Seaside Lagoon in the Redondo Beach, Marina during the winter months of December and January. Folks can ice skate in the warm sunny Southern California sun while the snow falls elsewhere! If they move, the GigaPan can leave a few folks needing body parts. Photo has 48 images, camera; Nikon coolpix P5100. John Post |

Fort Scammon is a Civil War fort in Charleston WV. Used by the south in 1862 and fortified by the north in 1863, it was used to guard the junction of the Elk and Kanawha rivers.
I grew up about a half mile away, and have fond memories of playing there as a kid. There are several USGS benchmarks here, for those into Geocaching. I stood on one of them while taking the photos for this panorama (it's a small stone plinth, clearly visible in the other Fort Scammon panorama). |
