spacer "The Roles of Angle Polarity and Linear Perspective in the Perception of 3-D Objects"

The role of linear perspective and its interaction with angle polarity (concave vs. convex) in the perception of three dimensional (3-D), multi-stable objects, objects with more than one dominant percept, is being investigated in this project. The study of perceptual cues is important because although most objects convey a single percept, the representation of reality that the visual system creates through sensory experience is disturbed when ambiguous figures are viewed. Ambiguous figures enable the assessment of the strength of visual cues on 3-D objects which then contributes to our understanding of how such cues are used in the perception of typical objects. I am using ?reverse perspectives,? first coined by English artist Patrick Hughes, to investigate the role of angle polarity, a cue that has not been researched significantly. ?Reverse perspectives? are 3-D scenes whose structures are polar opposite of what the pictorial scenes portray. The part of the structure closest to the observer is painted to look to be farthest away and vice-versa. The amount of time observers spend in the two conflicting percepts determined by our ?reverse perspective? stimuli is measured and analyzed using t-tests of the difference scores. In previous studies, the linear perspective formed in the illusion significantly overpowered angle polarity and subsequently, the strength of the perspective cue has been diminished in this project.

Marital Satisfaction in Black Marriages: Why Are Black Wives Less Happy?

Clear racial differences in marital satisfaction exist between Whites and Blacks. Whites express greater happiness in marriage than Blacks. There are also gender disparities: White and Black men report being happier with their marriages than their spouses. Research has also suggested that in terms of marital satisfaction, there are intra-racial differences among Blacks. The goal of my research is to ascertain why there are marital happiness differences within Blacks. I hypothesize that differences in marital happiness levels between Black husbands and wives are greater than the differences between Whites. I propose that the relative socioeconomic status of husbands and wives accounts for the differences in happiness levels between Black men and women. Compared to Black men, Black women are unhappier in their marriages because of the typically lower educational levels of their husbands. I test this prediction using mixed methods, which includes secondary analysis of the General Social Survey, a focus group with married Black women, and interviews with married Black men. I find that relative education helps explain Black women’s lower levels of marital happiness.

spacer Party Politics: Party Label Rather than Content Drives Agreement with Political Quotes

ABSTRACT
Political research has long sought to understand the forces that drive how voters choose the candidates they support. Indeed, party affiliation has been shown to be a reliable indicator of voter preference (Campbell et. al., 1960). But how strong is the influence of party identification on the electorate. We conducted a web-based questionnaire study to examine how influential partisan labels affected voter decision making. 174 participants first placed themselves on a continuum of party identification ranging from strongly Republican to strongly Democrat. They then rated their agreement with 15 quotes from actual politicians during the 2008 US Presidential campaign. For each participant, one third of the quotes were correctly labeled with the party it represented, one third were incorrectly labeled (i.e. a quote from a Democratic candidate was labeled ?Republican?), and one third which had no label. Counterbalanced across subjects, each quote appeared in each of the three conditions. We predicted that the party label would affect how much the participants agreed with the content of the quote. The results revealed a labeling effect such that participants showed higher agreement for quotes that were labeled with the party that they favored than for quotes labeled with the opposing party, regardless of whether the labeling was correct. Quotes with no label received neutral ratings. This finding has far reaching implications, especially in instances where group associations take precedence over support for the fundamental principles underlying the association in the first place.
