High mountain meadow on White Mountain Apache tribal lands showing recently killed and cleaned elk carcass and hairy Mexican wolf scat. Tribal wolf biologist Krista Beazely inspects the carcass and takes GPS reading. The White Mountain Apache Tribe is a leader in restoration efforts of critically endangered Mexican wolves, which were recently reintroduced into Arizona and New Mexico. The tribal livestock association, occassionally impacted by depredations, is working with conservationists to develop wolf-themed ecotours including wolf-watching, horseback riding, hiking, cattle drives, sweat lodges and Apache Crown Dancers. The partnership is intended to help Apache people benefit from the presence of endangered species such as the Mexican wolf and promote coexistence with controversial carnivores. Pilot eco-adventures are scheduled for late June and July 2009. Please contact cmiller@defenders.org for more information
