spacer A view over Ramsay Bay and the northern end of Hinchinbrook Island from Nina Peak. Hinchinbrook Island is a very large island national park in thr Australian tropics. The Thorsborne Trail on the east coast is one of the greatest backpacking trips in Australia, about 37 km long, following the coast through unspoiled beaches, rainforest, and wetlands. The northern end of the trail is about 1 km from the southern end of Ramsay Bay. The beach at Ramsay Bay is about 8 km (ca 5+ miles) long.

spacer Seven Up Peak is a mountain summit in Trinity County in the state of California. Seven Up Peak climbs to 8,100 feet (2,468.88 meters) above sea level. Seven Up Peak is located at latitude - longitude coordinates (also called lat - long coordinates or GPS coordinates) of N 40.958754 and W -122.880306.
Surrounded by iconic Trinity Alps such as Siligo Peak, Gibson Peak, and TriForest Peak, Seven Up is a quality walk up offering easy access and great views of Bear Basin, Granite Creek, and the Four Lakes Loop area of the Trinity Alps Wilderness. Seven Up offers a nice detour on the wonderful Granite Creek/Bear Basin Loop hike, or as another peak to bag while doing the Four Lakes Loop. Seven Up Peak sits at 8,100 feet at the head of three prominent drainages: Bear Creek, Deer Creek, and Granite Creek. Bear Creek is a beautiful and lesser traveled drainage flowing into Swift Creek. Granite Creek begins on the north slopes of Gibson Peak and flows northeast into Swift Creek and eventually the Trinity River (aka Clair Engle Lake). Seven Up Peak is comprised of a crumbling volcanic rock unlike its granitic neighbors. The peak provides ski touring in the winter and spring (and sometimes summer) and great hiking in the summer and fall.

Harbor at Portland Roads, near Iron Range, Cape York Peninsula, Australia

spacer The harbor at Portland Roads. There are a few holiday houses here, and nothing much else north of the Lockhart River Aboriginal community. During WWII this was a busy port, carrying material for the possible defence of Cape York against invasion. There was a very large jetty that gave access to deep water. All that is left is the small pile of rocks from which I took this panorama. A technical note--the panorama was taken with the Gigapan rig mounted on a monopod, braced by a couple of hiking poles and some fence wire. I had to hold it steady throughout the process because it was very windy. Don't forget your tripod!
