Near the Newcastle Quayside this road called the Sandhill is where some of the oldest remaining houses of the Newcastle Quayside can be found. They date from the 16th (centre) to 18th (right) centuries and were once occupied by wealthy Newcastle merchants. Much of the older Quayside housing was lost due to a big fire which spread from the Gateshead quayside across the river, in 1854.
In the black & white house in the centre left of this panorama there once lived a girl called Bessie Surtees who in 1772 defied the wishes of her wealthy merchant father and secretly climbed from an upstairs window to elope with a humble young man called John Scott. Scott later become a wealthy peer, acquiring the baronry of Eldon near Bishop Auckland. In 1801 he became the Lord Chancellor of England. Lord Eldon's name lives on in Eldon Square, the modern commercial shopping centre of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The RAF's XXV (Fighter) Squadron is due to disband on 4th April 2008 and, as part of this, held a Friends of XXV (F) Squadron Day. This is the main line-up of visiting aircraft from a similar position to the line-up 1 Gigapan, but looking northwards. The interesting clouds are the precursor to heavy rain which arrived a few hours later. In shot are various aircraft including (from right to left) the tailplanes of a Phantom, Tucano, Dominie, Tornado, the blue Falcon 20, and then four more Tornados. All the Gigapans of the main aircraft line-up are now uploaded - all the panoramas show some noise as an ISO of 400 was needed to cope the windy conditions outdoors!

The RAF's XXV (Fighter) Squadron is due to disband on 4th April 2008 and, as part of this, held a Friends of XXV (F) Squadron Day. This is the south east end of the main line-up of visiting aircraft, showing here the Tucano trainer of 76(R) Squadron, a Dominie of No 55(R) Squadron at the RAF College Cranwell, (where they are used to train weapon systems officers and operators, air engineers and air loadmasters in systems management, air leadership, decision making and teamwork) and a German Tornado. A couple more Gigapans of the main aircraft line-up will be uploaded over the next few days - all the panoramas will show some noise as an ISO of 400 was needed to cope the windy conditions outdoors!

A fabulous historic railway to visit and a wonderful chance to explore some old steam engines and wagons.
The railway was built to transport coal from nearby collieries to ships on the River Tyne.
The oldest part, c1647, was the Lobley Hill section, it had over 300 years of coal traffic when closed in 1964. The surviving 1725 Sunniside to Causey section is now the World's Oldest Working Railway and the Causey to East Tanfield section dates from 1839.
Marley Hill engine shed, built in 1854 and in colliery use until 1970, is where the loco fleet is maintained. the shed is open to the public every day. See http://www.tanfield-railway.co.uk/cms/ for more info.

Sadly I didn't take the Gigapan Imager beta to the Geneva Motor Show, so this is just a handheld panorama, aided by a very small Gorillapod, to give a flavour of what it's like on a busy last weekend of the show! There is a horizontal mismatch of the images due to my difficulty of being able to see and align key points in each horizontal strip of images while taking the panorama!
By the way - visit the show mid-week if you like to take photos without too many people in, or if you want to pick up a few souvenirs easily!!

Standing proud over Hexham's Market Place, this gatehouse defended access into the fortified area from the Market Place (seen in http://gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=3613). An early 15th century gatehouse it is four-storey high with a three storey tower attached. The staircase visible on the outside of the building led to what was once a courtroom until 1838. Above this was a hall. The fortifications were built as defence against raiding from Scotland as late as 1640. The Moot Hall is a Grade I Listed Building.

Another in the series of panoramas based around the historic core of Hexham and its wonderful Abbey. This shows the Market Place with the Abbey at its west end and the old Moot Hall at the east end. Beaumont Street (seen in previous Gigapans) comes in from the south and exits as Market Street to the north. Just left of centre is Hallstile Bank, a road leading north east originally becoming Alemouth Road an old toll road leading all the way to the east coast of Northumberland. Well worth exploring by clicking on the 'View in Google Earth 4.2' button

The world famous 'blinking eyelid' pedestrian bridge pivots so that the foot deck raises up and the supporting arch moves down until both parts are roughly level. Part footpath and part cyclepath the bridge has become a key linkage between the two banks of the Tyne, as well as a much photographed icon of the nort east of England.

One of the well known stories of Newcastle, this building has seen a lot of history pass by, and is now the North East regional office of English Heritage. A few rooms are open to the public and contain fine examples of Jacobean interior decorating!

The colourful tailplane of a Tornado F3 of 56(Reserve) Squadron - originally formed in 1916, the squadron, nicknamed the Firebirds, was until 2005 the display squadron for the F3 (hence the name on the tail and the date). The squadron continues to be the Operational Conversion Unit (OCU) for the Tornado F3 until it is phased out for the Eurofighter Typhoon introduction.
