Historic Saw Mill

spacer This historic Sawmill was built in the year 1863, and restored in 1955 & 2005.
This 8 sided mill is powered by 4 vanes of 22.5 meter length (74 foot ) each, and drives 3 huge saw blades.
Now a days the mill is operated by a group of volunteers, who run the mill as a museum (open for public on saterday and tuesday). On the photo you can see the volunteers hoisting in a tree trunk from the water reservoir.

Unfortunately the mill started rotating again when the shooting was about halfway. I tried timing the rotation in order to catch the last right hand vane in horizontal position ( took about 30 extra photo's on that attempt). Since I used a large overlap for such purposes, I was able to reconstruct the vane in the air. I will try to patch up the messy reflection in the water on the finished photo before printing on canvas.

spacer This artificial Ski slope belongs to Ski-centrum "Jorg Moser", and is located in the recreational park "Rutbeek" near Enschede ( www.skicentrummoser.nl ). This was supposed to become a 360 degree panorama, but rainfall made me stop at 250 degrees (otherwise it would have been a 8600 megapixel photo).

Apart from the Ski school with its restaurant and the beaches of lake "Rutbeek", you can see the city of Enschede, the famous beer brewery of "Grolsch" and the soccer stadium "FC Twente".

I will go back at a later date with better weather to try again, because this clearly is the highest point in the area. Since the distance views were not quite sharp either, I will then try different focus settings as well.
Although the Focus was manually set to the indefinite, the safety MF function was turned on (which is supposed to fine tune the focus in a small range around the manually set focus point).
This function doesn't seem to improve the focus for the far away area's, but the cloudy weather might also cause this less then optimal focus result (any comments on that matter will be welcomed).

Watermill & Waterlock in Mallum near Eibergen, the Netherlands

spacer This Water mill was originally built in the year 1188 and was used to grind corn. The mill had to be rebuilt in 1748 after a fire destroyed the original building. The waterlock and the mill both have been recently restored to old glory. Since June 2009 touristic boats can pass the waterlock in the river Berkel again.
Due to the typical cloudy weather here in the Netherlands, I encountered some exposure problems. The middle region of the terrace and especially everything in front of it, came out much to dark. This could be resolved somewhat by leveling out the lighting on 79 individual photo's before stitching. The face of the man under the umbrella could be fairly easy restored in Photoshop, although every action takes a lot of time on such a large file.
Does anybody happen to know why a 3904 megapixels photo is stored as 20 Gigabyte by the "Large Document Format", while the Raw format was only 10.5 Gigabyte ? Most actions like file opening, saving and cropping now take close to half an hour each !
An impressive Canvas of 90 x 360 cm could be stretched gallery style, which still would give an incredible high resolution : on that print size the resolution of the photo would still be 800 pixels per inch as input, which happens to match exactly our maximum printing resolution. This means that such a Canvas print could be explored with a magnifying glass just like you would be zooming in to the maximum on an online version.

3 Beaches & water-ski track on Lake "Rutbeek" near Enschede, the Netherlands (#1c)

spacer This first shot on this popular recreational location is less crowded with moving people then the smaller second shot which has been shown earlier. Therefore this shot of 414 photo's was actually not showing so much loose limbs and twisted people due to the movement. I had to spend 1.5 hours to manipulate 7 photo's in such a way that the same moving people would show up on all surrounding photo's.
Apart from water ripples the most noticeable stitching errors could be corrected !
Although this Gigapan is showing less people to explore, it still is worthwhile because this photo turned out a bit sharper focused then the other one.
If you start to zoom in on the right side you will find a water-ski track with 2 skiers plowing away. Further to the left you can find many people sunbathing and swimming on the next 3 beaches.
This Gigapan could actually be printed on 300 ppi resolution and stretched on Canvas from Kodak ( 9 meter ).

3 Beaches & water-ski track on Lake "Rutbeek" near Enschede, the Netherlands (#2b)

spacer This 2nd shot on this popular recreational location shows a lot of bathing and playing people.
This time I only shot 231 photo's because I was afraid that too many loose limbs and twisted people would be show up due to the movement.
Actually it wasn't too bad, I spend 3.5 hours to manipulate 25 photo's in such a way that the same playing or moving people would show up on surrounding photo's.
I think the result is worth exploring ! Apart from water ripples I think I caught the most noticable stitching errors !
If you start on the right side you will find a waterski track with 2 skiers plowing away and 2 fallen ones wondering what to do next. Next you can find boys playing with a frisbee and others with a ball in the water. Further to the left you can find countless people sunbathing and swimming on the next 3 beaches.
I stitched it on Mercator projection so that I can stretch it as an impressive sample on Canvas from Kodak (330 ppi input resolution on 600 dpi print of 1 by 6 meter). The first shot on this location is composed of 414 photo's and will be normally projected and geocoded so that you can see it on Google Earth !
It may take me a while to correct the gosts and twisted people on that 1775 Megapixel shot, so please check back later.

spacer Nice try, but photo was taken to close.
Most people were shown on 4 to 6 pictures, which doesn't work if they are moving.

Airplanes touching down at Schiphol airport

spacer Actually I caught 5 airplanes coming down, but some were not complete on photo, and 3 of them almost overlapped each other.
Had to do a bit of copy and pasting in order for the stitcher program to accept the whole plane.
Unfortunately the far away shots are not very sharp, but I was experimenting with the autofocus.
Does great on the near by detaisl, but it seems to get lost on the far away buildings.
Gues it is better to have a sharp as possible horizon, and leave the non-interesting fore front out of focus.
Will try again later on a better spot.

spacer This Gigapan photo is made on a concert by the Euregio Bigband.
This is an Bigband from Gronau with musicians from both Germany and the Netherlands (see http://www.euregio-bigband.de/ )
Because I was playing Bass Trombone myself, I could only make one set of photo's.
The original GigaPan didn't look good at all, because most musicians had moved too much in between the individually made 150 photo's.
Although the result was sometimes funny (missing or double body parts, the directors legs were 2 meters away from here body), the end result was useless.
Luckily I was able to correct the stitching problems, because I had used a large overlap.
After selecting the best photo for each musician, I did some cut and paste work to fix the stitching problems.

spacer I made two complete series of photo's of this Bigband. The director and some of the players were moving so much that they were either missing body parts or were playing on 2 instruments. I could correct this stitching problem by cutting and pasting the people back together from 2 different sessions.
For this experiment I did this on the induvidual photo's and let the stitcher program do its magic again. Maximum shooting angles were limited by the line of view from inside the entrance building.
Next time I will leave the Gigapan outside and shoot from a larger distance. That might give a better result with less distortion around the roof.
