Winter in Minnesota is a time for fun and festivals. The oldest and biggest of these is St. Paul's Winter Carnival, eleven days of outdoor activities, competitions, parties and parades. The ice carving competition in Rice Park is always popular, but temperatures above freezing last week have taken a toll. It was 11°F (-11°C) when I shot this; lengthening the button-push time to 3 seconds seems to have solved my problem of skipped exposures.

A Mongolian yurt in the middle of frozen Medicine Lake, the Shan-Tea is a warm oasis of tea and conversation away from winter's chill. My camera battery pooped out just before the end of the series and I filled in the rest of the column with black.

Volunteers of America SALT High School is an adventure and environmental based alternative high school near downtown Minneapolis. The "Write Me Up" shanty is a chalk board and magnetic poetry cube, where students can ask questions they have for the community.
This image has voids, possibly caused by the cold or by insufficient delay between captures. I still think it's worth posting.

Visit the ArtCar Taxi Shanty to book a trip from the parking lot out to the Art Shanties. Book a scenic tour of Medicine Lake after you enjoy hot food and beverages in the ArtCar Taxi Shanty. I continued to have problems with skipped areas and filled them in with white squares.

Art meets traditional Minnesota culture every year at the Art Shanties Project. The usual clusters of ice fishing houses on Minnesota lakes are re-imagined as themed art installations. As one writeup (http://tinyurl.com/yaj8ccg) described it, "the ad hoc assortment of whimsical art shanties offers both a celebration of and a refuge from midwinter's chill, a send-up to the wry humor, dogged determination, and sheer cleverness of the hardy folks who live in these sometimes brutal climes."
