Gigapan taken at PubCon's Search Engine Smackdown, Thursday, November 12 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
On the stage, Matt Cutts of Google and his counterpart at Microsoft, Sean Suchter both explained recent innovations in their respective companies search capabilities. Matt played up personal (or social) search capabilities while Sean highlighted recent Semantic and Visual search capabilities rolled out on Bing. Overall, it was an entertaining and insightful talk...
In this photo, Matt Cutts is at the podium. The lighting in the civic center was not so great so it was hard to get a proper setting on the camera, which resulted in a final product that is a little grainier than I hoped for. For the most part, people sat pretty still throughout the shot (which is composed of 128 photos stitched into this one), so the mis-splices are relatively limited. If you are in the online search or advertising industry, search through the crowd and see if you recognize anyone that was there.

Taken on a cold October afternoon (10/17/09) overlooking Turtle Pond from a Belvedere Castle overlook, this is one of the largest GigaPans I've taken yet. Almost 1150 images large, this took an entire afternoon to stitch using the newest GigaPan software (version 1.0). Note the top of the castle spire -- those are the instruments which record the official New York City weather. I'm sure this GigaPan would look better on a sunny day -- but there was something very nice about the windy autumn day that I think is well captured in this photograph. Also, the water is stripped in this image because the wind was really swirling and blowing the water around in all sorts of directions.
When it was built, the view from Belvedere Castle provided a vista over the rectangular receiving reservoir, which has been replaced by the Great Lawn, an oval of turf with eight baseball diamonds, loosely defined by plantings of trees in clumps in the manner of the English landscape garden, and, at the foot of Vista Rock, the Turtle Pond, redesigned in 1997 as a naturalistic planting, in which no single vantage-point reveals the water's full extent. Sunken concrete shelving at varying depths provide ideal water depths for shoreline plants such as lizard's tail, bullrush, turtlehead, and blueflag iris. The success of habitat for birds, insects, amphibians, and reptiles is embodied in sightings of species of dragon-fly not previously sighted in Central Park.

My family owns property in Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval, just twenty minutes outside of Quebec City. Adjacent to their land sits Rivière Richelieu, a tributary to Rivière Montmorency (just a couple hundred meters downstream). At the base of the river is this great little waterfall, captured wonderfully by the GigaPan.
This was the third and final GigaPan I took that day -- and while the resolution is slightly lower than the other two, I think worked out the color issues best. I'll return next year and will take another from this very spot, as it captures perfectly the wonderful serenity of the river confluence.

Every Columbus Day weekend, my mother’s side of our family congregates in Quebec City for Canadian Thanksgiving. My extended family also owns camp property in a fantastic town, Sainte-Brigitte-de-Laval, just twenty minutes outside of the city. Adjacent to their land sits la Rivière Richelieu, a tributary to Rivière Montmorency (just a couple hundred meters downstream). When I bought the GigaPan, I had this very spot in mind and I think the shot came out fantastic. I created a Photosynth here last year (http://photosynth.net/view.aspx?cid=dd8284a5-00c2-4db6-aa1b-50d2c06596a0) but the Gigapan came out even better. Photos taken October 11, 2009. Although several of Quebec City's buildings stand taller, the hotel is perched atop a tall cape overlooking the Saint Lawrence River, thus giving a spectacular view for several kilometres. The building is the most prominent feature of the Quebec City skyline as seen from across the St. Lawrence, and is a symbol of the city.
This GigaPan was taken from the park directly next to the Chateau around 3PM on 10-Sep-09. As it is a popular tourist area, there were many moving people. I did my best to pause the GigaPan when there were people moving in front of the camera. This GigaPan is unedited in Photoshop, uploaded directly from the GigaPan Stitcher.

Syri i kalter is a natural spring believed to be fed by Ioanina lake in Greece. Divers have not yet been able to touch the bottom. The name is said to come from a sound engineer who worked for some years in the nearby hydropower station, and compared the spring with the blue eyes of his fiancée.
I'd been here once before three years prior and told my wife I wanted to swim in it the next time. Of course, she thought that was crazy. We made it back late in the afternoon, on September 4, 2009. The sun was setting and the colors were not as brilliant as before, but the spot was still beautiful. I setup the gigapan and quickly stripped down to my shorts, standing on the shore line while my wife watched carefully the direction of the Gigapan robot. One her cue, I dove in and felt a cold shock the likes of which I'd never felt -- and probably hope to avoid in the future. I started swimming furiously across the short distance, but my muscles had to work much harder than I expected and it seemed to take a while to get to the other side. Exhilerating but pretty scary too.
In order to get in this shot, I had to time it perfectly. I wasn't sure the gigapan was going to capture me and was very pleased to see that it did.

On the mid-coast of Maine lies Camden, a fishing town and popular tourist destination. This photo was taken on a foggy afternoon and I wasn't sure how it would come out but I am pleased with the results. Taken August 21, 2009.

A 360 degree view, centered on downtown Manhattan, taken on the foggy evening of September 11, 2009. Each year, the city of New York remembers the attacks on 9/11 by shooting two soaring lights up into the stars, representing the twin towers. This year because of the cloud cover, the lights were muted but still generated an inspiring effect.

Nestled into the cliffs overlooking the Ionian Sea, Hotel Liro in Vlore, Albania is a rare experience. Offering balconies almost straight above the clear, cool, transparent Mediterranean waters. the hotel offers free use of kayaks, canoes, a pool, scuba, and various water sporting equipment. The restaurant and espresso bar are pricey by Albanian standards, which means, for $15 a person, you can eat an excellent meal with two appetizers, a main course, and beer or wine. The private beach below is made up of smooth rocks, but I suggest aqua socks or sandals. What I love about the Ionian Sea is that just a few steps out from the shore and you are above your heads (a haven for cliff-divers). You can literally dive into the ocean from the shore.
Three years ago we stayed in Vlore at a hotel above the cliffs where Liro sites -- we didn't see even the hotel until after we had checked in at the other hotel. We vowed to stay at Liro on our next trip and this time we spent three days and nights and we loved every minute of it.
Vlora beach in southwestern AlbaniaThe city of Vlora, known also as Vlonë, or Valona is located in the southwest of Albania, with a population of 61,300 inhabitants. It is in front of Karaburuni peninsula and Sazani Island, close to various sandy and rocky beaches and the scenic mountains. Vlora is Albania's second largest port, having regular ferry boat connections with Italian ports of Bari and Brindisi. The city is rapidly expanding with massive hotel developments. The downtown coastal region is literally starting to look like Miami -- I kid you not. Vlore and Hotel Liro is a must visit if you find yourself visiting Albania.
