I';m currently an assistant professor of Earth Science at Central Connecticut State University - my research interests include the geology of Mars (hence the username!) and infrared remote sensing... and sharing photos of interesting rocks I meet with people I find.

One of the popular hiking trails in Bryce Canyon is a relatively short hike to Queen's Garden - while this pan was not taken at the final destination, it's taken closer to the end than the beginning... a good way to view the scenery of Bryce from the "bottom" rather than the top

Almost to the south end of the Bryce Canyon Ampitheater (part of the northern part of the park itself), with another view of orange hoodoo formations.

I believe this is the southernmost view in the "Bryce Canyon Ampitheater", which is the part of the park accessible by shuttlebus and open year round. The park does continue to the south, and the views are also lovely - but closed seasonally.

At this point (between Escalante and Boulder), Rte. 12 in southern Utah crosses along the top of a ridge with drop-offs to both side, exposing expanses of Navajo sandstone occasionally cut by canyons.

Or almost - just past the campground is the entrance to the scenic drive through the park. We didn't have enough time to drive it, but we did have a few minutes to stop and take a pan (the stop sign at the right edge of the pan marks the start of that drive).
Capitol Reef was named for the sandstone ridge that blocked wagon travel further west - the outcrop here gives a good idea of the type of terrain that prompted that name.

Outside the entrance to Capitol Reef National Park is this particular outcrop - the red layers are offset just to the left of the mesa at the right side of the pan (I'll snapshot it...). There's a nice description of the geology on a nearby plaque (not visible here....)

That's the name of the rock units and a description of what they look like (geologists can be funny that way sometimes...) - these rocks likely formed in a coastal enviroment like a delta.
Some of the cave-like openings in this particular cliff face were used by ancient inhabitants of Utah for storage (the Fremont people).

A little bit down the trail from the Stump Spring Trailhead, again with a nice view of the salmon-colored rocks of the Claron formation.
