Looking to the West on track 4 with moments until the train arrived. The whitish train that is fragmented over on track 6 was the ICE, the high speed train, that popped into the station, loaded and zoomed off.

Waiting at the station, had a couple minutes to grab a shot. Nice town.

This bahnhof is the final stopping place before the steam engine works its way up to the top of the Brocken. Featuring a little gift shop and small restaurant as well as a ticket counter. The ticket to the top cost 16 Euro one way for an adult ticket. The bratwurst from the little stand were really good!

The Brocken is the highest point in Central Germany at a little over 1100 meters. This shot is relatively crummy but gives you the general idea of the place. Former Soviet listening post, it was walled off to the public during the cold war years but now is a popular tourist destination. Due to the micro climate the peak produces it was nearly impossible to get full sun for the whole shot, plus it was cold and windy making the shooting uncomfortable. Oh well. At least I got a partially decent shot. Over 760 images all told.

The silly train was only stopped for a short while, not long enough to catch the engine or wait for sunshine. The Brocken is the highest point in Central Germany at 1100+ Meters elevation. The steam powered tourist train starts in the villages in the valleys below and winds its way up to the top of the mountain. Wikipedia says that the Brocken was a former Soviet listening station and was walled off until the fall of the Berlin wall. Now it is an immensely popular tourist destination. One amazing thing about this gigapan is that I somehow happened to capture, in 1/800 of a second, the flash from the lady's camera on the terrace. Who woulda thought...

This steam engine carries tourists between the valley towns all the way up to the highest point in Central Germany, the Brocken mountaintop. The huffing and chuffing, the smell of the coal smoke, the whoooo whooo of the train whistle all evoke an era long in the past for railroad enthusiasts. This shot wasn't perfect since I was rushing to get the shot before the train left the station.

This was supposed to be a 360, but the batteries decided to give out.

Just a block long, a silly little tourist thing that dates back hundreds of years. There were all sorts of canals and things build years ago by some king.

Just south of town, the peaceful countryside. The high mountain far away to the South is the Brocken in the Harz mountains. To the East is the Asse Wald (forest, woods) and further the Elm Wald. To the West is the Oker Wald. The small town nestled in the valley is Neindorf. At the base of the hill the picture was shot from is the glider airport (flugplatz).
