Evergreen Drive separates the park from the houses on the north. The Santa Ynez range of coastal mountains are in the background. There is the Evergreen Disc Golf Course running throughout the park (see: http://members.cox.net/evergreen/ ) which can be hazardous to the casual park walker, but gives a cheap sports outlet for many folks.

The Devereux Slough is one of the few places the endangered Snowy Plover (small almost white sandpiper, usually blending in with the beach sand) hangs out. Can you Audubon folks identify other birds at this party? A lot of surfers were out in the high tide higher surf this Friday, which probably had some effect on the birds staying in the protected area.

taken with Canon SD790, views of Coal Oil, Ellwood beach area to Santa Ynez mountain range. Mountains show 2008 Gap Fire burn areas above Goleta. Beach has old collapsing wood piers that supported a road, probably just to reach the oil wells there, that have been mostly abandoned. Eucalyptus trees are from the original forest created by Mr. Ellwood, who believed the Australian trees (and other plants) would be the best thing for this dry area. They make for great Monarch butterfly resting areas and they make for great fires as well (some wanted, some not!).

waiting for the train...
There have been several injuries and fatalities on the central coast nearby with people getting too near to the tracks or trying to cut across at the last minute.
So, I say be forewarned that trains are moving at a high speed that can surprise you if not constantly paying attention and they are bigger than the tracks.
