A first time visitor to Yosemite Valley may well be overwhelmed. So many things to see, so many places to go, what to see, how to get there!
May I make a suggestion? Take the Bus!
http://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/bus.htm
While you sit, you are driven around the valley past spectacular views of the icons of Yosemite. Get off at stop #11 ( Sentinel Bridge ) and walk towards Yosemite Falls along the river. You'll have this amazing view of Yosemite Falls and the cliffs along the north side of the valley.
To the extreme lower left, crossing the river, is Superintendent's Bridge. In the middle of the view is upper and lower Yosemite Falls with the gully that the trail goes up to the left and Lost Arrow and Yosemite Point to the right. Farther to the right is Indian Canyon with Arrowhead Spire to the left and Lehamite Falls to the right. On the extreme lower right is the parking lot with the shuttle bus stop #11.

For many first time tourists to Yosemite Valley, their first view of the valley is much like that of the Maiposa Battalion, who in 1851 were the first non-natives to see and publicize the existence of these wonders. Tourists have visited the valley in ever increasing numbers ever since.
Visitors entering Yosemite National Park on Highway 41 have quite a drive from the south entrance gate. The winding road goes for 27 miles and after 45 minutes of driving you come around a broad corner under Turtleback Dome and get your first view of El Capitan and Half Dome just before you plunge into a long tunnel. As you approach the end of this tunnel slow down. At the exit you’ll want to put to the left or right into the parking lots and walk to the railing to absorb this spectacular view.

The hiking trail to the top of Mt Whitney ( 14,505' ) is an extremely popular trail, with many memorable spots along the way to the highest spot in the continental United States.
The infamous "97 switchbacks" portion of the main Mt Whitney trail takes you from Trail Camp, just out of sight on the lower left, at an altitude of 12,000 feet up to Trail Crest at 13,600 feet, just out of sight to the upper right.
In between are 97 switchbacks winding back and forth gaining 1,600 feet in 2.2 miles.
2.2 miles doesn't sound like it's very far, going up hill 1,600 feet in that distance is a little bit of work, it doesn't sound too hard! But consider this, you're starting out at 12,000 feet! This stretch of trail is where many people start feeling the previous 8 miles, start feeling sick from the altitude, and end up turning back.
Try counting, how many of the switchbacks can you count?
How many people do you see on the trail?
Sorry I didn't get the shots all the way up to Trail Crest. This was hand shot in bright sunlight using the LCD panel on my Canon SX10IS and the upper portion of the trail was more by guess than knowning. I couldn't tell where the trail was from the ity bity display.
This was taken from near the top of Wotan's Throne along the NW Arete approach. I had just finished another gigapan of the entire east side of Whitney that got messed up and didn't turn out. I sat there for a while taking in the view, taking handheld shots and panorams, before heading back down to Trail Camp.
Next year I'll do the trip again and get a full resolution gigapan that'll include the entire east side from the switchbacks all the way to Mt Whitney and maybe a bit beyond.

This is a high res and wider field-of-view version of the Yosemite Association's Ahwahnee Meadow webcam at http://www.yosemite.org/129/Web-Cam-View.htm.
Can you find the rock climbers on Royal Arches?
Can you see anyone on Half Dome?
Can you see anyone at Glacier Point?
What else can you see?

Big Oak Flat Road, also known as Highway 120, is the northern road into Yosemite National park. For most of its length it twists and turns its way towards the Yosemite Valley. However shortly before you enter the valley the forest opens up and the road straightens out. A large forest fire in 1990 cleared out much of the forest and underbrush and made a view like this possible.
Foresta is located inside the Park boundaries and is a collection of privately held inholdings. Many of these inholdings are summer homes and rentals. Can you think of a better place to spend a vacation? A 15 minute drive away from the wonders of Yosemite Valley!

Three highways converge on Yosemite Valley. The northern most of these is highway 120. It goes through a long tunnel and as you exit the tunnel you pass a turnout with this view looking at the Merced River coming down the Canyon with Bridalvail Fall in the distance.

This is actually a failed shot. It only got about a third of the way through when the battery in the Gigapan ran out. It wasn't particularly cold, but it must have been enough to sap the battery pack.
If it had finished I would have gotten a nice shot of parts of Vallejo and the Carquinez Strait Bridge farther to the right.
Ah well, I can always try again.

You ever wonder what they do with the snow when they clear a parking lot after a storm? Well at Squaw Valley they create a huge pile of snow at the east end of the lot.
Where's one of the best spots to take pictures at Squaw Valley? On TOP of this pile.
This is a 42 shot pan set taken looking west towards the ski slopes. Can you find; )tram tower on the top of the moutain )helicopter flying down the valley )the gondolas going up the moutain )various lifts )people going all kinds of things
