Here you see Gavin Booth and Adam Wilton of the British South Pole Expedition 2008 as they arrive at the South Pole on December 27. Their 700 mile, unsupported ski journey from Hercules Inlet to the South Pole raised funds for the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust.

As they cross the skiway they are greeted by Leah Street, one of our summer crew members who is also a volunteer tour guide. She will show them to the Geographic South Pole marker, the Ceremonial Pole and to the spot where they can pitch their tents. They will get a brief tour of the station and then wait in their camp for the plane that will take them back to the coast.

As a benefit of the shooting and stitching process that created this panorama, you see them again, farther to the right, as they are escorted to the tourist area in front of the station.

This panorama shows a wide view of the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station from the support buildings in the back (grid south) to the science buildings and Ice Cube project toward grid west and grid north. Please enjoy your tour as you explore the snapshots.

The 61 images of this panorama were photographed with a Nikon D 80 and stitched with Autopano Pro.

spacer Each year hundreds of people come to the Jane Austen Festival in Bath. An established tradition is a parade in period costume. This year the festival set a world record for the largest number of people in period costume in one place at the same time - 400 people!

I tried to create a gigapan group photo with the help of Jackie Herring (the organiser) and a kind soldier called Trevor and this is the result. My thanks to the Jane Austen Centre for inviting me to take this shot and to everyone who was patient enough to take part in this experimental image.

See the festival's web site (http://tinyurl.com/4bzxad) for more information. There is also a short BBC news item (http://tinyurl.com/ybacvyu).

Open Competition: how many anachronisms can you see in this image? For bonus marks, for each anachronism you identify, state whether it a prochronism or a parachronism. [Hint: this is a trick question!]

In Memoriam: Grandpa's Store

spacer This is a photo of the inside of my late Grandpa Stubbs's jewelry store in Chaffee, MO. After Grandpa retired from being a jeweler, he kept the store and filled the display cases with various items he collected as well as many handicrafts that he and my Grandma Stubbs had created. I have always loved visiting Grandpa's store--you never know what interesting curiosities you might find.

Grandpa was an amazing person. He contracted polio as a boy, and his mother wrote to Eleanor Roosevelt for help. Mrs. Roosevelt arranged for then six-year-old Grandpa to receive treatment at Warm Springs, Georgia, the same place where President Roosevelt received treatment, for free. Grandpa worked very hard and was eventually able to walk with just one brace, instead of two, and a cane.

After high school, Grandpa went to school to become jeweler, and he owned and operated this jewelry store for more than 50 years. After he retired, he filled the cases with things that he and Grandma collected and made at the 49 Elder Hostels they attended together.

If you'd like to read a little more about my Grandpa Stubbs's life, his obituary is at: http://www.semissourian.com/story/1453457.html

Now that Grandpa and Grandma have passed away, it's not entirely clear what will happen to the store. Probably everything will be taken down and our family will try to sell the property. I am very happy that I could take this GigaPan to preserve our family history.
