spacer Thus should really be called, "Play on Light," for there are colors, and different zones and some tones and shadows and bright to intense sunlight and even reflections, not to mention some cool looking architecture and granite slabs that you won't find anywhere else ... its got everything!

I was there to capture the sunlit door, the east door going into the chemistry building, Keck Hall. This time of the year, to see the golden color of the door, you have to be there early and the effect only lasts for a few minutes.

Because of the early time, I was not expecting many people to be around, especially students and I was surprised to see a couple of students studying (one you will see, but the other left with his friend for breakfast), a Rice Dad and his young son, Landry, named after another Texan, Coach Landry. After the panorama started, all of a sudden, Susannah appeared with her boy friend, a Rice post doc and their two dogs and all agreed to be in my Gigapan.

Please compare this Gigapan to a previous Gigapan from a month earlier:
http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?auth=f1d3c7ab9c51c27b4ab6eeb3222b3398

Notice that the trees have changed their appearence. It is good fortune that I walked away from completing it, otherwise I would not have had a great panorama as what I have with this panorama of Susannah.

As always, this Gigapan looks great when viewed in Google Earth via the GE link and was taken in the same area as one of my earliest Gigapans: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=6656

And if you go to: http://www.pbase.com/texas_photo/image/87015471 you will see that this window that we see the reflection is one of my favorite locations on campus.

spacer This was a very enjoyable effort and the results are most rewarding. It was a pleasure working with Maggie and Renuka and this GigaPan glows since it is one of my most often viewed panoramas.

The location can be seen from an earlier gigapan: http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=6655

An experiment to determine the Leica D-Lux 3 depth of field. The camera lens was two feet or less from the granite stone and was shot at f/8. Thanks to Leica lens design: depth of focus extends from the lettering on the granite all the way back to Fondren Library.

spacer Because of the very nice weather, I wanted to set up behind Duncan Hall and take a panorama of the Engineering Quad.

Note: the panorama that I had hoped to take on 10/18/2008 has now been taken and can be seen at:
http://www.gigapan.org/viewGigapan.php?id=12141.

Since it was Saturday morning, I was only expecting a few sleepy students to wander by. Was I totally surprised by what I saw when I drove up! This pano was taken about 10AM and all the excitement was to begin at 11 and an Astronaut was to speak at 1PM to about 1200 expected high-school students.

Shades of Harry Potter... as you can see, I caught Cyrus looking over at Cyrus :)

Latest News from the BBC (12/13/09): http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/8407139.stm

Last year after I had received my GigaPan robot, I was fortunate to come upon the Sally Ride Science Festival and had taken a GigaPan (http://gigapan.org/gigapans/11021/). Today, I was again lucky and arrived to discover that this was the day for the 2009 Festival.

This panorama could easily become a big-time favorite of mine for it has lots to see... a good size moon rock, two solar telescopes and one of Rice's finest, a RPD officer, who I have had the pleasure of knowing for several years, who you can see in one of the snapshots.

This panorama is comprised of 26 photographs, which were taken with a Nikon D-70 using a Nikkor 28-80 f/3.3-5.6G lens and was stitched using the GigaPan Stitcher software.

Note: This panorama can be seen in Google Earth as a curved panorama on a curved surface by clicking the link, View in Google Earth (assuming that you have Google Earth installed on your computer).

Additional information can be found when clicking Stitcher Notes ... this panorama was taken in 40 seconds.

The entire series of eleven Rice Snowstorm 2009 panoramas can be seen via this link: http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/most_popular/?q=blizzard+riceu

This hand-held panorama was taken in the Engineering Quad on December 4, 2009 a little after 2:15 PM and I am looking towards the Mechanical Laboratory. In this panorama we meet three Rice Students; Eva, Phebe and Karen and who are attracting some attention for one reason or another. Others were taking a single photo of them; however, through the power of the GigaPan Stitcher, we see five poses of them in this panorama.

This panorama is comprised of 30 photographs, which were taken with a Nikon D-70 using a Nikkor 28-80 f/3.3-5.6G lens and was stitched using the GigaPan Stitcher software.

Note: This panorama can be seen in Google Earth as a curved panorama on a curved surface by clicking the link, View in Google Earth (assuming that you have Google Earth installed on your computer).

Today was a busy day for me, but I was close to Rice and had my camera, so I was able to stop and take three panoramas on a gorgeous, really a stunning day in Houston. This is the first pano I took of the three.

This panorama is comprised of 19 photographs, which were taken with a Nikon D-70 using a Nikkor 28-80 f/3.3-5.6G lens and was stitched using the GigaPan Stitcher software.

spacer Lots to see in this 360 panorama: The three granite slabs, the different schools and labs and the artwork (figural relief sculpture) at the entrance to Abercrombie Laboratory.

Note: In the title to this GigaPan, I included three degree symbols and because of the symbols, when the GigaPan opened in Google Earth, it failed. Now it works since I deleted the symbols.

Since this was Wednesday, this must have been taken on the campus of Rice University (I had just been to Fondren Library), and had my new camera lens with me and wanted to test taking a 360 with it and even though there were too many clouds; well, it was only to be a test. As I approached the center of the Engineering Quad, a student walked by and I asked her if she wanted to be in this GigaPan, but she was on the way to class. She recognized me as I had taken portraits of her at a campus costume party a few days before (soon to be uploaded to gigapan.org).

As she was leaving, Alicia came up to me and asked if I was Donald. It seems that she had won an employee award and was going to have her photo taken by the Engineering Department photographer whose name was Donald. To make a long story very short, in this GigaPan, we see Donald taking a few snaps of Alicia.

In this panorama, we see the three famous slabs of granite (http://tinyurl.com/RiceUniversity-EngineeringQuad), Keck Hall (http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/8855/) and Duncan Hall (http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/9622/).

This hand-held 360-panorama was taken by my trusty Nikon D70 with a new lens, the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G. Additional details can be found on Stitcher Notes with information there concerning the GigaPan Stitcher run.

Note: This panorama can be seen in Google Earth as a beautiful 360-degree curved panorama on a curved surface by clicking the link, View in Google Earth (assuming that you have Google Earth installed on your computer).
