Reused Hijaz Railway ties
Created: July 16, 2008 Taken From: The Petra Great Temple from behind Snapped By: Sarah Sharpe (jiaaw_sarah) Comments: none - add a comment Total Views: 276 These are some of the many railway ties from the former railway line that linked the provinces of the Ottoman empire and facilitated the hajj (pilgrimage to Mecca). The railroad was made famous in this region because of the exploits of Lawrence of Arabia and his Bedouin militial that constantly attacked the Turkish supply lines during WWI. Apparently there was a good deal made on a concession of this wood and has found its way into making parts of the site accessable as well as in the restoration of structures such as the Great Temple. |
