I was quite suprised when I saw four of these modified Toyota pickup trucks roll over the horizon. They provided support for the skiers as they raced to the Pole. The Toyotas were modified in Iceland by Arctic Trucks, a company that provides specialized vehicles to go way off the beaten path.

There are quite a few images of this array on gigapan.org. If you look through the images you will notice that the more distant scope does a lot of turning. Alas, I never seem to see it spin!

This silvery globe on a striped pole sits in the middle of the flags of the 12 original signatory nations of the Antarctic Treaty. The Geographic South Pole marker was just a few feet behind me when I took this photograph.

Is this the research station? I had no idea there were such large sturctures at the pole. I thought it was all portakabins and tents. On reflection this is crazy idea, but still it is the first time I have seen such a large building down there. I would like to see the whole thing to see how big it is. Is it visible in Google Earth?

The blue building houses the Dark Sector Laboratory. The dish on the left side is the South Pole 10 Meter Telescope. The scientists here are studying the cosmic microwave background, looking for clues about the origin of the universe.

IceCube is a multi-national project that is placing an array of digital optical detectors (DOM's) in strings of sixty each into drill holes that penetrate over a mile down into the ice. Their goal: detect neutrinos as they pass through the Earth.
