So even when you're flying in clouds you have complete information about your position. GPS is gradually making these older navigational aids less essential. Last Post: Dr. Christie Rowe (UCT) says: "That's a beautiful photo. It's not actually at Roi Els though, I believe that's Cape Hangklip which is west of Rooi Els. It's the Ordovician Peninsula Sandstone which is the ridge capper locally - this particular bit is downdropped to the south (right in the picture) along Gondwana-opening related normal faults. The Peninsula sandstone (with the younger but nearly identical Nardouw sandstones these are often lumped as "Table Mountain Group" sandstones or TMG) is 98% quartz, well rounded/sorted, with big sweeping crossbeds and channels and currently the community seems to favor a fluvial environment of deposition, although in the past, shallow marine was favored. It's just slightly older than the late Ordovician Gondwanan glaciations and is overlain by a thin peri-glacial unit. This area was latitude 60-70S at that time - there is further paleomag work going right now to try and resolve the position in more detail." (Posted 2 weeks ago by Ron Schott (rschott))

Gigapan: Ka'iwi Coast - Oahu
Snapshot: Coral block(?)
Description: Attests to the violent energy of seawater flashing to steam. The layered deposits are mostly ash and lapilli sized material. I surmise that this is a littoral cone deposit - as lava flowed into the ocean it caused violent boiling of ocean water which ejects lava fragments and nearby country rock (in this case corals) into the air. Prevailing winds blow much of this ejected material back onto land forming a littoral cone. Alternately, this may be the direct result of a coastal hydrovolcanic eruption where magma rising through the crust encounters either seawater or groundwater directly and causes a phreatic or phreatomagmatic eruption.
