This GigaPan was shot early in the morning from the Windy Ridge viewpoint in the eastern portion of Mt. St. Helens National Volcanic Monument. At 1900 input images it took two hours to shoot and almost a full day to stitch on my brand new workstation. But the result is all I had hoped for and more. Now that I've finally broken the ten gigapixel barrier, I'm eager to push the outside of the envelope even further...

Well, technically California's state rock is called "serpentine" but the proper rock name is serpentinite. I dedicate this GigaPan to all of the geologists fighting CA Senate Bill 624. I highly recommend following Garry Hayes' blog coverage here: http://geotripper.blogspot.com/2010/08/serpentine-nazis-serial-killer-hatred.html You can also follow recent developments on Twitter by searching for the hashtag #CAserpentine. If you live in California it may not be too late to contact your state legislator and tell them that you oppose SB#624.
Long Live #CAserpentine as California's State Rock!

Hays is the county seat of Ellis County in western Kansas. The geologist in me appreciates the trouble that the builders went to to bring in such nice igneous and metamorphic rocks that make up the stairway and lobby. The large antenna atop the courthouse is for the Hays Police Department which occupies an adjacent building.

No, the steeple doesn't actually look like that. There seems to be a gravity well in the stitching software. In previous versions of of the stitching software I'd go to the saved projected images and clean this up in Photoshop, but since that feature has been removed in the current version of Stitch I'll leave this as is as another reminder to the programmers that we'd really like that feature back.

I thought about reshooting this GigaPan today, but when I got over to Ellis the sun was playing hide and seek behind some clouds. Instead I decided to go back and restitch the set I shot back in early 2008. And whaddya know, the new Stitch program aligned them with much better level this time. Since the only snapshots on that other one were my own I suppose I'll just retire the earlier version of this GigaPan once this restitch is posted.

This is yet another GigaPan I shot back in 2008 that didn't stitch at the time. I recognize the dandelions, but does any one know the identity of the small purple flowers?

This 360 degree panorama was shot at the corner of South Walnut St. and West Florida Ave. in Greensburg, Kansas on July 17, 2008, about 14.5 months after a devastating F5 tornado leveled about 95% of the city. Greensburg was still in the early stages of rebuilding then, and is now a prime example of a city that has embraced green rebuilding practices. For more information on Greensburg see the city website (http://www.greensburgks.org/) and Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Greensburg,_Kansas). Some of the artefacts from the devastating tornado can be seen in this GigaPan: http://www.gigapan.org/gigapans/2423/
This is another GigaPan I shot some time ago that failed to stitch in an earlier version of the GigaPan Stitcher software.

It's been a while since I GigaPanned around Hays, KS. It's time to remedy that.
